Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, only for the movie to lose that shortly after Marvel Studios decided to take the focus off Kang the Conqueror (a result of the mixed response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Jonathan Majors' legal troubles).
However, a new actor is expected to play a Kang Variant who will still be the Multiverse Saga's main threat. Meanwhile, Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron is overhauling Avengers 5's script after Jeff Loveness first took a crack at it.
He was supposedly fired from the project shortly after the Ant-Man threequel flopped, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has moved on to Wonder Man and the Shang-Chi sequel.
Today, we have a small but potentially significant update from the Film & Television Industry Alliance (a company "dedicated to providing film and television industry professionals with up-to-date job announcements and casting call opportunities in the entertainment industry").
They've learned that Avengers 5 will begin shooting on December 31, 2024, with production taking place in both Los Angeles, California and London, England.
It's a little surprising to hear work is slated to begin on New Year's Eve, though this could be a placeholder on Marvel Studios' part. However, with the movie scheduled for a May 1, 2026 release, work will need to begin sooner rather than later.
The site has also shared a brief plot synopsis for Avengers 5, though we've done some digging and learned it's the same one used for The Kang Dynasty comic book:
Kang the Conqueror has been a foe of the Avengers for decades! Now, witness his ultimate triumph, as he brings all of his vast cross-time spanning legions to bear to conquer the Earth once and for all! Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes hold back the colossal forces arrayed against them or will they face defeat and subjugation beneath the boot of the Conqueror?!
While a director still hasn't been announced for the movie, it's possible a filmmaker has been found. Sam Raimi is among the rumoured candidates, but when he was recently asked if there's any truth to that, the filmmaker responded, "I don’t have any plans. But I would love it!"
With the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 fast approaching, it might not be too much longer until we get an official update about plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Mighties Heroes...
