AVENGERS 5 Gets A Possible Production Start Date Despite Still Not Having A Confirmed Director

Avengers 5 still doesn't have a confirmed director (as far as we're aware), but a new listing appears to reveal when cameras will start rolling on the highly anticipated movie. Read on for details...

By JoshWilding - May 08, 2024 09:05 AM EST

Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, only for the movie to lose that shortly after Marvel Studios decided to take the focus off Kang the Conqueror (a result of the mixed response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Jonathan Majors' legal troubles).

However, a new actor is expected to play a Kang Variant who will still be the Multiverse Saga's main threat. Meanwhile, Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron is overhauling Avengers 5's script after Jeff Loveness first took a crack at it.

He was supposedly fired from the project shortly after the Ant-Man threequel flopped, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has moved on to Wonder Man and the Shang-Chi sequel.

Today, we have a small but potentially significant update from the Film & Television Industry Alliance (a company "dedicated to providing film and television industry professionals with up-to-date job announcements and casting call opportunities in the entertainment industry").

They've learned that Avengers 5 will begin shooting on December 31, 2024, with production taking place in both Los Angeles, California and London, England.

It's a little surprising to hear work is slated to begin on New Year's Eve, though this could be a placeholder on Marvel Studios' part. However, with the movie scheduled for a May 1, 2026 release, work will need to begin sooner rather than later.

The site has also shared a brief plot synopsis for Avengers 5, though we've done some digging and learned it's the same one used for The Kang Dynasty comic book:

Kang the Conqueror has been a foe of the Avengers for decades! Now, witness his ultimate triumph, as he brings all of his vast cross-time spanning legions to bear to conquer the Earth once and for all! Can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes hold back the colossal forces arrayed against them or will they face defeat and subjugation beneath the boot of the Conqueror?!

While a director still hasn't been announced for the movie, it's possible a filmmaker has been found. Sam Raimi is among the rumoured candidates, but when he was recently asked if there's any truth to that, the filmmaker responded, "I don’t have any plans. But I would love it!"

With the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 fast approaching, it might not be too much longer until we get an official update about plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Mighties Heroes...

I already hear the bitching, but I would love to see more of Sam Raimi behind these MCU cameras. If he were to be chosen for Avengers 5, I wouldn't be remotely upset.

@IAmAHoot - same

I liked MoM and the guy certainly has a style that could be fun in a big ensemble film.

@IAmAHoot - Raimi's direction was the saving grace of that film for me. There's a lot in the script I didn't care for, but I forgot half of it at the snap-zoom to zombie Strange busting out of the ground.

@TheVisionary25 - Oh hell yea. It's one of my favorite visuals in the entirety of the MCU.

@IAmAHoot - agreed. Outside of Zombie Strange, which didn’t quite work for me, I thought MoM was very good and well done.

And Raimi certainly has the directing experience needed for an Avengers movie.

And then giving her the pep talk at the end through rotting flesh instead of stealing her powers.

Yeah , I don’t buy this but I’m glad to be proven wrong…

The date just seems odd and I doubt they would have a start date without a director in place (unless they do and haven’t announced it officially.

I wouldn’t mind Raimi but my picks are still Benson & Moorhead who worked on Loki S2 and Moon Knight (will be doing Born Again aswell).

Then why, pray tell, would you even print it?

@clintthahamster - plus , if they are positing that synopsis then doesn’t that immediately make them less credible and thus this info as a whole?.

It's just a placeholder.

Get the Russos and their writing team, that would go a long way in getting the crowds back.

@Ryguy88 - agreed. I wouldn't mind Benson & Moorhead or Raimi either, but that team is a guaranteed hit. One writer for two movies of that scale isn't enough imo

That synopsis sounds really generic. Kinda hope Kang (although I much rather see Beyonder at this point) has a very strong motivation to go after this reality.

Maybe it's the only one where he can build his Battleworld because there are no Infinity Stines anymore, or it can sustain the energy to do so because it's the only reality where the 50% got snapped back.

Just drop Kang and go in a new direction. Introduce the Beyonder for a 2 parter or do something like Korvac.

I will be very surprised if this comes out in just less than 2 years from now.

Especially if this report is legit and they’re not starting production until basically 2025. I just don’t see how 1 year is enough to film, edit, re-shoot, add effects to, etc. their biggest film to date.

Plus they have so much to release before then, and given the recent audience response to some projects, rushing this doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I understand the clamor for the Russos and Marcus and mcfreely. Those 4 are incredible but I think getting them again would be like when WB got Joss to redo JL. It’ll just be a lesser version of what they already accomplished.

Plus, I love those 4 guys but they didn’t know how to write hulk very well. I’d like to see a good director/ writer who can redeem hulk and Thor.

The hardest part of all this are the stupid characters they’ve added. Like now, we have to address Hulk’s son, Thor’s daughter, and all the other useless characters they added in phases 4-5.

Do we actually have another Avengers left to do a movie justice? If it’s going to be made up of fringe characters and children I’d rather they didn’t tarnish the name.
