Disney Acquires An Estimated $100 Million In Marketing Support For THE AVENGERS

Variety reports that Marvel and Disney have acquired an estimated $100 million in worldwide marketing support for The Avengers. This is their largest promotion push yet, with companies including Acura, Dr. Pepper, Visa, Wyndham hotels, Harley-Davidson, Land O'Frost lunchmeats, Farmers Insurance, Hershey, Symantec, Oracle, Colantotte and Red Baron pizza having all signed up. Their aim is to develop strong relationships with these brands moving forward and you may recall that many of them have already played a role in past Marvel Studios films.

"It's really a strong core of partners that have been partners for many of these pictures," said Bob Sabouni, exec VP, worldwide marketing partnerships, Marvel Entertainment. "We're building a thematic universe (with these films), and (the returning brand partners) are very much part of that. There are certain core partners that we are going to always work with, but this movie's appeal is so broad that we have a wider target of partners we can go to and create programs with."

The site goes on to reveal that most of these advertising campaigns will launch on April 1st (although we have already seen a fair few of them) and many are expected to continue right up until it is released on DVD and Blu-ray this September. They also mention that Marvel and Disney's primary marketing plan will revolve around TV spots,; radio, print, online and in-store ads; in-theater promos; art on packaging; plus sweepstakes, social media, games and comic book tie-in's. But, in Europe it already comes out in April, so shouldn't the DVD/Blu-Ray come out in August? :-)

I just put the Avengers poster up at the cinema I work at a few days back. As soon as I did, the 'OMIGAWSH LOOK!' and double-takes started.

I think that there already are a fair number of people excited for this movie!

A film like this is all about marketing for movie studios and getting their return from the merchandise sales, they couldn't give a frak about the box office because that will be puny in comparison to what they make from selling the merch to the general public and fanboys.

Cars 2 didn't make a patch on Cars 1 domestically but it made money internationally with over $500 million. That's nothing to the $5billion it made in merchandise sales! This is why Avengers gets a huge marketing budget to help push those merch sales!

While Disney is lining up marketing, I'm busy lining up my opening weekend essentials for the movie. Since I'm planning on seeing this a few times I'll need at least a half ounce of good sticky, and at least 4 blunt wraps. Can't wait.

I hope that the cover art for the Blu Ray isn't the posters art. I don't care about the lack of masks in the posters, but i do want them on the Blu Ray case.

Smart, Marvel Studios. They've handled the business side of their films better than just about anybody. Hopefully they'll keep using that advantage to make awesome movies. Can't wait for May 4.

They are doing a great job with promotion so far. What everyone needs to understand is that this number is actually very normal for a film like this. Almost every big film requires at least $50M for marketing if not more. Add the worldwide campaign, and there you go.

Ceejay: I think you have this thing nailed. The Avengers toys have been in stores for a couple of months now. Before long, you'll see the Avengers on just about everything kids come into contact with in any manner, and on every aisle of the grocery store.

Good reference to Cars 2. That movie exists because the merchandise continued to sell well enough long after the first movie that they realized a second movie was needed to introduce new characters and keep that thing going for another four or five years.

Its not really that unusual for it to release in September. Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor all came to theaters in May and released on DVD/BluRay in September.

Marketing is the only thing that matters when getting a product out there. I am sure it will be worth it. The hype alone has been pushing enough interest. I am sure they this movie will easily break 100 million the first weekend. If it doesn't break at least 150 million on the first weekend, then maybe it will flop, money wise. Of course, then you have world wide money...

Oh crap, I just sucked the fun out of it with weird business talk lol... My back... :)

-looks in pocket- oh good I have a monkey joke in here somewhere. "Monkey walks into a bar and says, can I have a piece of pie. Bartender says, we don't have pie, the monkey says yes you do, one from the tap. Bartender says, oh you mean a beer. Monkey looks at him funny, that's what I meant, I'm a monkey, what, you expect me to have perfect diction you silly Knee grow."

I agree with spanglish - it is ironic that this movie is about Heroes saving the world, and yet the people who made this movie as well as the people who are spending the 100 million to market it are far from heroic, as they could have used that 100 million to save a lot of children's lives..... It does make your stomach turn.... I know that we can just brush it off by saying "Oh well, that is just the way the world is, bla, bla, bla dee bla" - but isn't the world what WE make it?? I love my movies as much as the next man... but after reading this article it really hit home, it just isn't right...
