Jeremy Renner Was Glad They Didn't Go With The Classic Hawkeye Look For THE AVENGERS

There was a lot of debate around which costume would be best for Hawkeye in The Avengers. Purists favored the purple getup, but Renner ,who will play the character, was glad they went with a more Ultimate look..

Remember back when it was announced that Hawkeye would be appearing in The Avengers? Countless debates, arguments and discussions about what costume they would/should use. The comic purists wanted that old school purple look with the Wolverine style mask or some variation on it, those more in favor of a realistic take wanted them to go with something more like the Ultimate version.

Well the man who will be donning that costume recently spoke to Hitfix about playing Hawkeye. He reiterates much of the stuff we have covered about a possible spin off solo movie etc but one new detail he reveals is the following..

One thing Renner did appreciate about the role was the opportunity not to wear the "old-school" Hawkeye costume from the original Avengers comics.

"There’s a couple different universes," he said. "There’s the Ultimates, and then there’s the old school version. And I wasn’t interested in wearing purple tights when I’m 50, so I love that they went the Ultimates route."

Obviously as an actor having to wear the outfit he would favor the less "over the top" look. As do I. But now that you have seen how Renner will look as Hawkeye are you glad they went that route or would you have preferred a bit more color? A mask perhaps? It's a long standing debate and I'm sure it will continue to be. Should film makers make more of an effort to be faithful to the appearances of the comic character seven if it is very clear that they won't always translate to screen as well as a modified version? as long he has the personality of the 616 universe Hawkeye and the special arrows he could be wearing a dress for all I care :P

and the costume does have a little dark purple in it.

Nah, the purple costume would have looked garish on the big screen. Between the green Hulk, Thor's big red cape, Cap's red white and blue and Iron Man's crimson and gold, there's enough color in the character designs. Taking the Ultimates route with Hawkeye was the right thing to do.

I'm just glad they kept the more 'classic' Iron Man look. I never did like the Ultimates version; with that helmet he looked like Twiggy from Buck Rogers lol

im glad they didnt go with his traditional outfit just cause it wouldnt have looked good. captain americas outfit in the avengers doesnt look good either in my opinion. plus the only reason cap has his outfit like that, is because hes from the World War era so of course hes gonna think hes outfit is cool and is gonna keep it traditional. isnt the one hawkeye wearing from the ultimates version anyway? which seems like they are having the ultimate avengers anyways.

I think the Hawkeye and Captain America costumes aren't quite right yet. Hopefully they can be improved for a sequel.

Cap looks silly in his most of the time. Masks are funky and hard to make work in real life, you end up looking like a power ranger or pro-wrestler. my hope is that cap is out of his mask most of the pic, which judging by trailers so far seems to be the case. Plus im a bit disappointed Evans has dropped so much weight...looks a little too steve and not enough CAP

FAIL! No mask = teh ghey. I don't mind the color but the mask is a must. I hate actor's desperate face screen time. Happened to Wolverine too. ACTORS: WEAR THE DAMN MASK.

Nomis, don't agree at all. And it's not as black and white. Some costumes translate, others don't. And by translate I don't mean they don't belong in a "realistic" world, I mean unless you are making a comedy they look plain ridiculous. Sure a few die hards like yourself might get a kick out of seeing this..

But the majority would laugh their asses off. Film makers understand this..actors understand this..but somany guys sitting behind the comic books watching them make these movies just can't seem to grasp it.

I'd rather have a silly costume then one that's just leather and it's called a costume.

if his costume was like this with the red and black color scheme, with the toned-down mask "ears", losing the loincloth, and the pirate boots, it couldve worked IMO. Renner's "old-man" face disturbs me. LOL

So glad they toned Hawkeye's look down. How ridiculous would the X-men have looked with Wolverine's yellow and blue costume? Yellow and blue!

I agree with both sides.
They could go with the 616 and risk humiliating not only the actor, the character and the film.
Or they could could go for the Ultimate's and save face without losing any sleep.
My question is why don't they take the time to bring in concept artists to meet somewhere in the middle.
I understand Hawkeye didn't get his own solo excursion pre-Avengers, making it difficult to sell any look.
So I am content and hopeful that they might play around with the outfit in the future.

Nomis, nothing about Iron Man's look doesn't translate though! You can tell looking at the comic that it would still look good on screen. Hawkeye wouldn't. Plus, don't you think they try these things? Concept sketches etc? They probably even had a more classic suit made up for Renner for all we know and dumped it because..he looked like a dude standing in purple tights with a silly mask on and a H on his head.

novaprime - 12/2/2011, 1:30 PM
Marvel would have changed the costume to make it fit the movie and be bad ass, ((((@Holy monkey ))))the only reason they changed the x costume for the was b cuz marvel was afraid, of not making money, and buy the way all x mens were shiit there costumes were shiit, Magneto was shiit Sabertooth was shiit and looked like shiittt, cyclops was fuhking trasshhh, holy berry was a terrible storm with a shiit wigg,

Rokker, heard that argument before and it doesn't make sense. You guys say you want the costumes from the comic EXACTLY as they are? So what "imagination" are you allowing these well funded costume makers to use? How much money does it take to stop a dude with wings on his head looking like a dude with wings on his head?
novaprime
novaprime - 12/2/2011, 1:34 PM
Sooo doesnt cap look like a dickkk with an A on his head, Wolcerine was shiit in every movie with out,a mask he needs 1, [frick] hugh jackman [frick]k fox reboot the hole shiit and get carl urban for the role.. i dont get u guys. Ya all dick ride wach other. But if hawkeye had a mask yall be sucking him offffff

Iron mans costume translated well to the big screen. They gave cap a legit reason to don red white and blue. Hulk is green by nature (I doubt they'll give him purple pants)

Hawkeye is a shield agent. He's not a recruited superhero (at least... I don't think he is) so there's little reason for him to wear a purple costume. It would be cool if the incorporated some purple to his uniform but whatever. I believe in Marvel. They haven't disappointed me yet.

Caps costume looked good in the trailer. Not so much in the set pics but we should know by now that it won't be as vibrant. And I think he'll looked jacked in the movie. He looked pretty big in the trailer.. And that's all that matters

as long as he has a variety of totally ridiculous arrows i enjoy it but a mask of some sort would have been cool...im thinking kind of similar to the mask from the main charcters suit in the Wanted comicshttp://www.beyondhollywood.com/stillsx/2007/06/mark-millar-wanted-comic-cover.jpg

Cap is a perfect example. He by far looks the worst out of the team. That new outfit is too garish. I'm sure it won't matter so much in the actual movie but the pics don't do much for me.

I am okay with Hawkeyes look either way. He is not one of the lead Avengers, so it isn't as big of a deal to me.

I don't expect comic book superheroes to blend in with everyone else. It kind of defeats the whole personification of being a superhero in their superhero garb. Having superhero powers already takes them out of the realm of realism and believability. It's kind of like taking the Hulk and making him flesh-toned when he changes because it would look more realistic and human. Who cares?! I want to see a raging green Hulk! I like Cap's current look for the Avengers. I like the bold true colors of our red, white and blue. I am very disappointed in the new Superman look as the colors of the outfit are way too subdued for my taste. Superman should look vibrant and bold and not blend in with everyone else. To each their own.
