Talking to The Huffington Post while promoting his latest release, Much Ado About Nothing, director Joss Whedon has revealed a little more about exactly how much creative control the success of The Avengers has resulted in him having with Marvel Studios' upcoming slate of adaptations. Unfortunately, when asked about the online speculation that Clark Gregg's 'Agent Coulson' will be brought back as 'The Vision', he doesn't really address the question! Check out his comments below and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

Clark Gregg is in "Much Ado," too. The Internet is saying he could return in the sequel to "The Avengers" as Vision. I don't know how this works. If you wanted that to happen, could you make that happen? Do you have that power?

I have some power, you know? I think there's a level of trust. You know, Kevin Feige and I have always had mutual respect, and on the first movie he was very supportive. But there were definitely things where they were like, "Hmm, we don't see that." And I think now Kevin's in a place where it would be more like, "We don't see it, but we think you do."

Like, "We can't argue with the way the last one did"?

Yeah. And that doesn't mean they're just going to roll over and I'm going to say, "Oh, it's 'Great Lakes Avengers' and we're going to get Squirrel Girl and you're gonna love it." You know, they need to believe. But all I want to do is make the movie that they want. And so it's been great. We're having that same kind of, "What if? Oh, and what if?" And "I was thinking it would be funny ... ooh ooh ooh." There's definitely a level of earned trust, but as with any good studio head or producer, that doesn't mean a free pass.

So ... he didn't actually answer anything. The thing about Clark Gregg as Vision is probably false.

This 'Coulson as Vision' idea needs to die just like Coulson did in the movie. It's a crazy idea.

@@IronFan93......what you said...

Agent Coulson isn't Vision. Should be. Hopefully, won't be.
You can't just say "Oh, we managed to kind of save him, he is now known as Vision."

Leave him dead. It adds depth to the character's arc, and was the entire reason for the Avengers uniting to begin with...it gives them a reason for being...separate they were weak and because of that weakness and bickering, a friend to them all gave his life...together they are strong and motivated!

And I'm pretty sure, despite what he says, Whedon could probably walk into Marvel Studios and tell them Batman was joining the Avengers. They'd probably say "Ok, let's roll with that. How you gonna write it?!?"

They should just leave the creative control to the people who are actually working hands-on with the movie. I find that a lot of studio producers almost never know what they're talking about.

if he's just the director like Raimi or Burton, i can see feige & co. not relenting him more autonomy, but, Whedon's also the writer and him doing both chores HAS proven GOLD for both Marvel and Disney (and paramount), so unless Feige or any other individual in the management wants to get FIRED, nobody'd dare to touch Whedon. so, it's all up to whedon, whether he's gonna be a megalomaniac and go crazy with his newly-acquired powers or maintain humility and reasonable cooperation with the people hiring him.

The only way I can see having Agent Coulson as Vision would be to have the plot go along the lines of:

Ultron creates vision in Phil Coulson's image and it would hit a personal nerve with The Avengers, affecting them all emotionally and enraging them all. It would lead on to them, saying something like "How dare you disturb the grave/memory of Agent Phil Coulson!"- which emphasises just how cold hearted Ultron is.

The point to this approach would be, that it would mirror the first movie as well as being somehitng new, in regards to Agent Coulson again, being the reason why The Avengers all come back together to take Ultron down!!

Who knows... it could also be a good reason for more people to join The Avengers. Perhaps Phil Coulson on his past adventures has already met and befriended Black Panther and AntMan+Wasp (in reference to Iron Man 2: World Map of found/recruited Heroes).

Actually, Yeah! I like this idea! :D lol it seems to make sense and ties the strings together nicely.

i'm not as against to the "coulson is vision" idea as some of you are, i just don't think they should do it right away like in avengers 2, it takes away from coulson's death.. maybe wait until avengers 4 or 5.. happens all the time in the comics, could work here too.. right? right?!

They could just do the twin brother "routine" from Beerfest and even let Thor call him "Son of Cole" so that there's none of that weird "getting to know you" phase.

Lord Loki has spoken

I don't understand why websites keep asking this question about Coulson and Vision. No one connected to Marvel Studios has indicated that this is even something they're considering. It's just something a fan thought up for no reason other than they thought it was a cool idea. The interviewer even says "The internet says".

It's just ridiculous how this thing has taken off even though there's absolutely no merit to it even remotely figuring into their plans.

Coulson as The Vision would be just fine..why intro some new actor & waste time w/long backstory?

Vision isn't a sacred character like the big 3 Avengers,Iron Man-Cap-Thor.
Coulson's death is still a tragedy & helped the team form, even if he comes back as The Vision the actual human Coulson died for heavens sake!

I say it doesn't matter as much as Black Panther MUST become an Avenger sooner rather than later,he's too cool to leave out.
