Marvel E-I-C Axel Alonso Talks More About The Relationship Between The Comics And Movies

A few recent changes as a result of "Marvel NOW!" have led to comic book fans wondering exactly how much of a role the movies are playing in the direction that fan favourite characters like The Avengers and The Winter Soldier are being taken in. Hit the jump for Axel Alonso's take on the subject.

Just how much of a role Marvel Studios has in the creative direction of Marvel Comics is a big topic of debate among fans. Well, one of them put the following scenario to Marvel E-i-C Axel Alonso; what if the big screen version of Doctor Strange is portrayed as "a teenager with heavy eyeliner and a lot of tattoos, and it makes money"? Is that how the comic book character will suddenly be portrayed? "That is definitely not how we do it," he emphasised. "If Marvel NOW! proved one thing, it’s that we put premium stock in our writers. "Avengers" reflects the vision of Jonathan Hickman, not Marvel Studios. And the same is true down the line."

Another fan was curious as to whether Black Widow's role in Marvel's The Avengers and the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier led to the relationship between her and The Winter Soldier being ended recently. "Bringing that relationship to a close was completely Ed Brubaker’s decision as he wrapped up his run on the series." Despite these comments, there's no getting around the fact that the movies have had a notable impact on the comic books (the introduction of Nick Fury Jr. and Agent Coulson for example). Except for that one time where Spider-Man put on his black suit again for Spider-Man 3, or when the Avengers won AvX because the Avengers movie was a hit, or when Agent Coulson was added to the 616 universe when the Iron Man movie came out, or when the GOTG were given a new series to hype up the movie, or when Spider-Man was given organic webshooters because Raimi's movie did that.

You know, except for those times.

i couldn't give a f*ck what they do,its up to them they own the characters.if you don't like what they do don't read their comics,its that simple.

with all the bad shit marvel think up they release some quality comics as well that can rival anything dc comics put out.

It does, extremely. Always has. Back in the 90's, when Batman Forever came out, artists would draw Bruce Wayne in a way that resembled Val Kilmer.

I hope in The Winter Soldier, there is a feud between Barton and Barnes over Natasha.

I don't believe Axel. Ex. Cap's costume now reflecting the MCU version. It's not all bad though. It's real good to see the Hulk back on The Avengers again.

Avengers assemble? Everyone's costumes? Infinity crossover? Thanos in general? Would anyone have been royaly ticked if he had said yes? We emphasize certain things here to keep our cash cow relevant and therefore strike while the iron is hot and keep the readers wanting to see what is on film... And why not capitalize in the pages too? Duh. I get it. I enjoy it. I like that one effects the other. We all for more of that with the shield series. Don't lie. We are not stupid and you now look a bit arrogant,sir.

of course they are media whores but if it helps get new readers & shift more comics what is wrong with that?

i hate what they've done with spider-man over the last five or so years but superior spider-man was the biggest selling comic in january,it doesn't even have to be peter parker to sell.

Marvel72: That's because Superior No.1 was a first issue and was coming off the hype that Amazing 700 generated. It having massive sales was to be expected. We'll see how it's sales really play out in the coming months.

Also to add to the list, Thanos getting his mini series and event later this year, along with Guardians of the Galaxy suddenly getting put on the same pedestal as the rest of their heroes. And the numerous relaunches of titles when a character gets their own movie...

fair point on superior spider-man,as for thanos getting his own limited series & event this summer,with guardians of the galaxy getting a new series as well.

the last time the guardians of the galaxy had a series was in 2008-2010,marvel since then has announced a movie is coming in 2014.

so between 2010 & now marvel may of gained new readers that know nothing of thanos & the guardians of the galaxy,so if these launches make marvel money,introduce new readers to characters they may know nothing about as well as get people interested in an upcoming movie.

its all good it helps the comic industry & we get to see more comic book movies made of the characters we love,so be it.

LEVITIKUZ You make a very good point. Marvel doesn't own the movie rights to either of these popular characters. By taking them out of the picture they effectively control how the younger/newer moviegoers will feel about them. I would not underestimate how this could affect these characters popularity. Let's face it, if they don't reach certain profit expectations they could end up back in marvels stables that much quicker. Makes you wonder, could this be a conspiracy?

But, when the movies arent cannon to the comics we complain. We want the movies to reflect the comics but not the comics to reflect the movies? I like that they go some wat hand in hand and wont be suprised if it gets to the point that they fill in blanks like a story arc is started in a movie, continued in the comics but the finale is a movie. Like how they planned to do the gunslinger movies/tv show. Let this grow intowhat ever its goimg to be. Make mine Marvel
