With Marvel & Joss Whedon's highly-anticipated film The Avengers in the square of filming, becoming more of an actuality, it's no surprise the actor whose reprising his praised 'Iron Man' role, Robert Downey Jr. seems more confident in how the film will turn out. And revealing so in a recent brief interview, tipped from our great ally RIMBreaks, check out what he had to say.

Is there any way the movie can meet fanboys' expectations?
Yes, I wouldn’t have said that a month ago, but it's actually going to be pretty good. It’s really tough to imagine all those superheroes actually making sense together but Joss Whedon, our director, is an incredibly surprising individual with what he’s been able to think out.

Robert, will you reprise the Iron Man role one more time after that?
“Well, one for sure: `Iron Man 3,’. And then we’ll renegotiate … again.”

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

Joss is probably the best fan focused director of all time so I have complete faith in the Avengers movie.

I don't see a problem in Tony Stark aging a bit he's neither a god like being, a super soldier or a virtually immortal feral mutant, he's not an kryptonian superman. RDJ should do it as long as he wants to not saying he should do it till sixty or some thing but atleast avengers 2 and one iron man movie.

should age be an issue for actors anymore, if they can make patrick stewart and ian mckellen look significantly younger for X3 don't see why it cant be applied to RDJ, who looks much younger then his age.

c'mon rdj sign up for more movies!!!! also anyone know what magazine has thor, cap and iron man on the cover? either empire, total film or sfx?

Tony Stark is often drawn with half his hair being gray, RD could portray him well into his 50's. He's an older superhero, not like a 20 year old spider-man or a never aging 25 year old captain America.

If recent history is any kind of indicator, then you can forget about RDJ reprising his role after IM3. Feige and Marvel Studios do NOT want to pay for talent any more, and I can guarantee when renegotiating, RDJ's price will go up. They prefer to do it on the cheap when it comes to actors.......otherwise Mark Ruffalo wouldn't be anywhere near this film.

I honestly can't picture anyone taking over the role after Robert Downey Jr.

Check out my X-Men: First Class Sequel (possibly trilogy?) ideas.

niknik are you seriously comparing terence howard and edward norton situation to downey???
he is like a god to marvel.without him there probably wouldnt even be more movies that we are seeing now.
if he wants 30 mill + gross % for each film, rest assure they will give it to him.but i dont think he is that greedy and he will never ask that much money from them.beside they already showed how much they want him when they increased his salary from 500000 to 15 mill for iron man 2...

RDJ is getting a little long in the tooth, but honestly i can't think of anyone else who could play the Tony Stark role besides him. he totally owns the role and there isn't any young actor who can step into the suit and kick ass the way RDJ does.

I wish that I had Downey's level of confidence in this film. Almost everything that I have heard about this film points towards it being a LOT more like the filthy ultimates (which I am well on record as despising absolutely) than like the classic Avengers (which I am similarly well on record as being my favorite superhero time of all time). I have nothing against them doing an ultimates movie. Just CALL it that, rather than borrowing the name of the Avengers. And I'm not like some who are demanding the pure original lineup. I'd be happy with a lineup like we see on Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, for example.

That is a good way to blend newer ideas in with those classic characters- following the lead of EMH. The stories on that series show a fine blend of newer elements with the classic elements that made the Avengers a great team in the first place. Truly one of the best superhero series ever aired on television.

A low on cash Charlie Sheen will portray Tony Stark in Iron Man 4. Cheap, but quite good.

Looking like he could carry on is one thing.Being able to endure it is another.Plus there always comes a point when an actor gets bored of repetition and wants to try something else.

@ LOGANXX35-XMEN first class was the best of the xmen movies period. The continutity and dialouge in those films were F grade by any school of film making. And Hugh Jackman, although I like him, Was terrible casting... BuB!

its a good thing our opinions don't matter ;)

The age isn't really the concern in these franchises. It's about the money (not that RDJ is money grubbing, but Marvel's got to pay up) and whether or not the actor wants to do something else rather than be consumed by a role for years and years.

If the scripts and stories are good I imagine we will be seeing Downey as Iron Man in various projects for years to come after Iron Man 3. He is a smart guy and will know when enough is enough or when they don't work any longer.

he's gotta be iron man till he dies. i know its way too early, but this avengers franchise is going to destroy everything at the box office. not even considering the possible sequel possibilities........

Chewtoy

Norton was replaced because he sued the producers of TIH during post-production over who had final cut of the film, and it derailed the marketing campaign (he did next to no press for the finished picture, leaving the country when it was being released.) Marvel gave him a lowball offer they knew he would reject for The Avengers and then moved on casting someone else because they simply didn't want to work with him again. It has no bearing on RDJ's deal. Yes, they might decide that he'll be too expensive for more Iron Man flicks, but what happened with Norton isn't evidence of it.

Yeah even before the movie was in the works my friends and i talked about how RDJ was perfect for the role. No one else ever came up as a possible actor to play Stark/Iron Man. I could really not imagine anyone else playing him.

Like others have said, he would easily be able to continue with the role even as he gets older. In fact it would be an interesting twist in the story and dynamic with him dealing with getting older. While Thor and Captain America are virtually ageless.

I wish marvel just does Iron man 3 and Avengers then brings out other characters and cut the cord on Iron Man Movies. I really don't want to see Ironman become like the 80's superman movies where they simply just make a movie just to make some quick cash.
