During the exhibition of his amazing artwork for Marvel Studios in Paris, concept artist Ryan Meinerding discussed with CineComics.fr his most recent work with the studio; The Avengers big-screen superhero assembly. Commenting on designing Captain America's uniform, his unexposed ears, seeing the film finished, and much more, watch the nine-and-a-half minute long video interview below!

Here's a transcribed excerpt that address the design of Captain America's suit.
"For the costume of Captain America I had to really get involved and ensure that Chris [Evans] appears as a tall, muscular strongest possible in fact. [...] Joss [Whedon] had the desire to suit the film version of the Avengers to offer a version closer to that of comics with minor adjustments. [...] We have encountered some problems especially with the helmet the Captain, he would for example be opened with the ears of Captain in the open air, but I think it did not work. So we decided to cover the ears. You know I saw the movie and I think that really makes the costume well on the big screen. [...] What I can tell you is that everyone has been very involved and really tried to offer the best costumes. [...] I wanted really make the transition from World War II and when he wakes up 70 years later when we discover a completely different outfit. And that, that will interest people."

Sounds like he has to talk himself into liking how the Cap suit turned out. Even though I'm not really loving how it turned out I can forgive them a little bit because it has to be one on the hardest marvel costumes to put on film and you can't just drop the uniform. Unlike the complete redesign of the X-men suits Cap is to tied to his look. That Being said I would love to see a version of the Commander Rogers uniform in a future movie, that is by far my favorite.

They took Thors Helmet, gave Cap a helmet and keep one on Loki.

The approach does make sense though, they couldn't have some mask with exposed ears and wings. Maybe the costume will change as we see more Cap.......hopefully.

Cap's costume will look good on film. Take my word for it. On another note, I'd love to see what he can do with other characters, such as Dr. Strange, Namor, Black Panther, and even some of the cosmic characters.

We can complain about it all we want, but we all know the helmet/mask is gonna get about 15-20 mins, tops, screen time then its comin off so we can all see Evans face. Prolly in his contract somewhere.

I don't think Cap's costume will be distracting in the film. But regardless, the costume design team failed miserably.

And it has nothing to do with Cap's ears, people. It's simple color distribution. Specifically, there's 3 areas where they blew it.

1) Cap's arms. Your eyes automatically go to the white of his upper arms instead of cool tones of the blue. So you automatically look at the inside of his arm, which makes the arm seem smaller and less intimidating. This is a shame on so many levels, not the very least because Evans busted his butt to get a great physique for the character and they diminish it with a mistake so simple and unnecessary.

2) Cap's neck. Cap's ears aren't exposed in TFA and yet his helmet looks awesome. Why? Simple: His neck is exposed. Much like I pointed out above, the contrasting flesh tones balance out the head being slightly larger. What helps this even more is the chin strap that's brown, because this is even more of a ''cool'' color tone than blue. Thus, the flesh tones stand out even more compared to the two cooler tones around it and make his lower mouth and neck seem bigger. In Avengers, the bulbous helmet is just enhanced by the distribution of slightly darker blue around it.

3) Cap's belt. It's size greatly diminishes everything around it since it's so massive and the contrasting red and white are too small to combat it. Thus Cap's abdomen/torso are reduced to almost emaciated proportions. The blue doesn't help either, because it blends his legs into his body and gives the appearance of a individual who's wearing his belt far too high.

Whatever, just my two cents. Design is all in the purpose. If they wanted to make Cap look small, they succeeded brilliantly. The fact that Evans still looks like a born leader is a testament to his physical acting ability.

Interesting critique RainbowRider; I don't know enough about these things to agree or disagree.

IMO the costume is fantastic. The only real problem is the helmet because it increases the head size to body proportion and CE is already not that muscular.

The screenshots and clips with CAP not wearing the helmet look fantastic!

The ones with the helmet may look excellent (CAP leaping off the bus) or may be a bit off (the circling group shot); but certainly not scene/film ruining.

Some of the promotional material have some VFX modifications of the body proportions that make it look really good. Hopefully something similar will be applied to the actual film.
