BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES #1 With $36.2M, TOTAL RECALL Stumbles With $26.5M

Deadline is reporting that this weekend's box office receipts are off by as much as twenty-five percent from a year ago. Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises came out on top, and Total Recall opened with a thud.

From the Aurora shooting to the Olympic games box office receipts of $120M are off by as much as twenty-five percent from this time a year ago.

Going into it's third weekend The Dark Knight Rises was expected to have to contend with Total Recall for the number one spot at the box office. After the dust has cleared Batman has come out on top with an estimated $36.2M, well ahead of Sony's Total Recall which is expected to pull in a dismal $26.5M. If these numbers don't miraculously improve the reboot of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1990 science-fiction adventure film will most certainly struggle to make back it's $150M budget. If anything this weekend has proved once again that Colin Farrell can not carry a movie.

It isn't all bad news for Sony as The Amazing Spider-Man pulled in $4.5M this weekend pushing it's domestic take over $250M.

The Dark Knight Rises is now playing at your local theater. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

Honestly thought "Total Recall" would do a lot better than this, just thought hadn't come across that bad despite having Biel and Farrell as leading pair.

Oh well, let this be a lesson to anyone else wanting to remake or base something on an Arnie movie - No Arnie, No money.

I'm not gonna blame Farrell on this one. It was a remake no one wanted or needed, and didn't even try to be any different from the original, other than through a watered-down PG-13 rating.

I honestly dont care for TDKR, it was over hyped disappointing for me. I was anticipating to much, expect to much and came out knowing it was a complete MESS.

Bring on the reboor.

Good news for TASM now, the greatest of 2012 IMO. Total Recall can suck my nuts.

It always baffles me how they give weekend results on a Sunday morning before 1/3 of the weekend has even passed.

the great thing is that DKR isnt even 3d, total recall is. if DKR was 3d this would be much wider.

What is the score/rank for TDKR on Metacritic? or IMDB? Oh what about the average score on RT?

robertneville - It did but remember that massacre that occurred? Still not bad with zero marketing post Aurora.

@AmazingAvenger3

yes but TA was reviewed as a kid friendly film after THOR and CA. Critic werent expecting that much from it

TDKR was reviewed as an adult, mature film after TDK the best film of 2008. Critics were expecting ALOT from it

and its average score is higher anyway

@gillri How is it an "adult, mature film"? You're acting like you know how critics reviewed the films. Anyways I never mentioned Avengers even though it is better.

haters gonna hate. avengers was a great movie, i loved it but it was just a fun movie with zero complexity. tdkr on the other hand wasn't just fun.. it was complex, dark and a great way to end this fantastic trilogy.
MisterFixit
MisterFixit - 8/5/2012, 4:08 AM
@rebellion why is it complex? because it contains a ton of scenes not needed or too much longer? Or because the high motivation of Bane's actions?

I guess people don‘t care for Metacritic because it doesn‘t contain all reviews, and thus may give a false image of the movie. IMDB is based on the public‘s reaction to a film, not critics. You should be the one to decide whether you like a film or not, leave the critics opinions aside. I fricking loved Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
AmazingFantasy
AmazingFantasy - 8/5/2012, 4:29 AM
TDKR was a complete letdown and disappointing, an over hyped mess and never felt like Batman AT ALL IN THE MOVIE. Movieweise, TDK shits all over this, Batman wise BB rapes this. Wasn't the best out of the 3 nor even being "Batman-ish"

No good characters, Batman isn't even in the movie, Alfred goes away for half the film. Now onto Bane, Talia and Catwoman.

Talia- Underdeveloped-plot device.

Bane- Doesn't look not have heritage from Batman I grew up with as child watching the 90s show/reading comics. Bane just felt like a walking catchphrase machine. Gets killed by Catwoman...
Seilna Kyle isn't even Catwoman, she’s just Miss Kyle. She was hot and all, no whip, claws or tail is a pass.
The only part I liked was the last 30 minutes, and [frick]ing hell the worst way to end a trilogy is to have the audience unsure is he’s alive or dead. No closure.

And what’s worse is Nolan did "[frick] you fans he's Robin, we aren’t doing that haha suck my dick"

7/10. Disappointing, over hyped mess that doesn't live up to TDK or BB.

Now this is BATMAN on the screen the way he should have always been, Nolan lost Batman at Batman Begins and moved onto the crime-drama bullshit with a mix of "Batman".

"The shooting has nothing to do with why the box office drop"

Yeah, it's definitely the Olympics. I don't get why WB positioned this film so late in the year, either, as Avengers and Spider-Man 2.0 stole its thunder.
MisterFixit
MisterFixit - 8/5/2012, 4:32 AM
@squaremaster it DID HAVE some negative effect, but not 25%. $354M+25% = $441M. Are you sure that without the tragedy after just three weekends the movie would be at 441?
sameoldthing
sameoldthing - 8/5/2012, 4:40 AM
Rises was not as good as previous 2 movies..why go into all the detail,it was a weak way to end the trilogy.

Anyone arguing points about how good or bad Rises was is just giving an opinion anyway.
Maybe next Batman franchise will make movies that improve on each successive film.

Box office results doesn't make a film good or bad..Arnold's Total Recall was a fun action movie, the new one is darker & is derivative of other sci-fi films..wait,it has Kate Beckensale so I love it!
MisterFixit
MisterFixit - 8/5/2012, 4:46 AM
i go with 10-12% at most + the olympics, but DDD is right: another 10-12% have not seen TDKR just because not interested. Anyway it'll deserve to reach 1 billion

The Olympics is getting record ratings which are expected to rise with the track events this week
Zoidberg

@DoubleD

You are obviously making stuff up, as your Olympics comment showed (it has the highest ratings in 36 years).

And apparently you missed the several polls and reports made not just by entertainment website but also by proffesional services (like Nielsen) that said 25% of moviegoers were scared to go to the movies.

Easily better than Star Wars I-III. Not better than LOTR, but still great. My top two comic movies this year were Avengers and TDKR...no debate.

I cannot wait for the Hobbit and later MOS next year!

"I don't know anyone that is watching the Olympics. Last time I saw the ratings for the Olympics they were way down too, "

They don't have to be watching it on tv at home. They can be streaming it online or going to bars to watch.
