Clayface First Reactions: DC's Version Of The Fly Is A Gory Showcase For Tom Rhys Harries

The first social media reactions for Clayface have arrived, and while it's still early days for the R-rated DCU horror movie, it sounds like body horror fans will find plenty to love here.

The social media embargo for DC Studios' Clayface has lifted. So far, it sounds like the R-rated movie delivers body horror, strong performances, and gore-heavy scenes horror fans will love.

The review embargo is currently set to lift next Wednesday, the day before Thursday preview screenings will begin. There's a chance that DC Studios will now move that date up, but as always, whether the early reactions match the full reviews remains to be seen.

It's worth noting that it was harder than usual to gather these Clayface reactions, as many DC fans on social media are pretending that they've seen the movie and have shared overwhelmingly positive reactions (an 18-year-old fan with 83 followers hailed it as "one of the best DCU projects by a landslide," for example).

Fortunately, we've been able to gather the genuine efforts below. Critics from outlets like the Hollywood trades haven't weighed in yet, and like Supergirl, this first wave of reactions comes largely from more fan-oriented websites.

Still, the response so far has been great, with comparisons to The Fly and Darkman and plenty of praise for lead star Tom Rhys Harries. The only complaint so far is that "not all of it works," but that's drowned out by comments like, "A welcome change of tone that proves the DCU can do it all."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

No reviews from real critics ✅
Desperate DC fans sharing bullshit reactions ✅
Only fan accounts (and the dork Anthony Mackie made cry) desperate to be quoted sharing reactions ✅
Eventual Rotten Tomatoes score of 48% ✅
Another DCU flop ✅

@Nighthawk01 -Had a buddy who is in the early screening group. He liked it but did say there are going to be some flaws for some fans of DC.There are zero hints of Batman...no post credit things etc.He doesn't think it's going to do well at the box though.

"I liked it but it's not something I'd pay to see going in if I wasn't a huge DC fan.The no Bats things is going to be a major issue here.Clayface isn't going to bring in those types of people that will make it a box hit.I still have no idea who at DC thought this was a good idea to make this the third big screen movie in the DCU.It's pretty much a body horror/love story"

Considering the review embargo doesn't lift until a day or two before the movie opens, I can't help but worry this won't be as good as the trailers made it out to be.

If it is 10% of "The Fly" 's quality it will be an astounding win. We will soon see

I hope thus does well. It would be nice to have SOMETHING to look forward to...

But people are just gonna argue the toss no matter what the outcome.

I'm looking forward to seeing it but have very low expectations. I think it will struggle regardless of it being good or not unfortunately.

The only person I recognise is that Feige shill frosty. Are any of these other people legit critics?

@NotMyDiagnosis - One or two at most. The rest are Twitch streamers, fan accounts, etc., but this was the best I could find, and I certainly wasn't going to include Brandon "I've never seen a movie I didn't like" Davis.

@JoshWilding - lmfao yeah i saw that shill's reaction and instantly remembered his 'supergirl soars' reaction.

Well Gunn's mood seems a lot better than it was at the supergirl premier so maybe this is a good sign.

@NotMyDiagnosis - That guy is the biggest LARPer in the comic book space. 😂 But yeah, fingers crossed. I'm getting Sony villain movie vibes from the trailers, but the body horror stuff does excite me to see it. Just hope it uses the R-rating like Obsession, not Kraven.

Hope it does well. Would be cool if we got more comic-based horror movies around Halloween.

Looking forward to seeing it. We need more DCU content like this WITHOUT Gunn's creative stamp all over it.
