Glen Powell Rumored To Be In Talks With DC Studios For A "Big Role That Requires A Major Commitment"

Though we don't have many details, a new report is claiming that Glen Powell (The Running Man) is in talks with DC Studios for a major role...

Glen Powell (The Running Man, Top Gun: Maverick) has been a popular fan pick to play the DCU's Batman for a while now, and a new report from Jeff Sneider has reignited speculation that he could be in contention to land the role.

Sneider has heard that Powell "has been in talks with DC about a big role that requires a major commitment/multiple options."

Many fans have jumped straight to Bruce Wayne, but there are obviously plenty of other possibilities. Following the recent news that DC Studios is developing a new John Constantine movie, Sneider seems to feel that the titular Hellblazer is a more likely candidate.

Fans noticed that Powell started following DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn and The Brave and The Bold director Andy Muschietti (assuming he's still attached) on Instagram last year, leading some to wonder whether he could be in the running to suit up as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming DCU movie.

Despite previously stating that he wasn't particularly interested in playing a superhero, Powell did say that he was "always a Batman guy" in a recent interview.

"I would have a wild take on Batman," he told GQ. "It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone - it’d probably be closer to Keaton."

Though he didn't share the screen with Batman (Christian Bale) himself, Powell actually had a small role in The Dark Knight Rises as a Wall Street broker who gets on the wrong side of Tom Hardy's Bane.

Gunn has previously confirmed that creative plans for Batman have changed since we first learned that a new take on the iconic hero would make his debut in The Brave and the Bold.

Fans suspected as much, anyway, since Gunn has previously admitted that he was finding it difficult to come up with a satisfactory way of introducing a brand-new big-screen Dark Knight to the burgeoning shared universe.

A user recently asked the Superman director the following on Threads: “James, have the plans for DCU Batman changed creatively in some way since the 2023 announcement of The Brave and the Bold?” Gunn replied with a brief, “Yep.”

This obviously doesn't give us much to go on, and could mean any number of things. Will Batman still debut in The Brave and the Bold, or could it be sooner? Have Gunn and Peter Safran decided to make Robert Pattinson's The Batman the DCU's Caped Crusader after all?

The latter seems unlikely, but with the recent delays, there's a chance Gunn and co. have rethought their approach to Matt Reeves' "Elseworlds" films.

Peter Safran was asked about DC's "duelling Batmans" during an interview with IGN, and assured fans that Reeves recently pausing production to deal with a personal issue will not result in the sequel being shelved.

"We've got Batman: Part Two and [the animated film] Dynamic Duo in 2028. Listen, I couldn't be more excited about the plans that we have over the next five years and, obviously, a lot of them, we're just not able to talk about yet, but I think you're never going to please everybody, but I have a feeling that people are going to be excited about what we have coming up. And, again, Batman: Part Two, everybody's aware of the issues we're having right now, but, what we've seen so far of the shoot, it looked absolutely fantastic and Matt Reeves is a supremely talented filmmaker. Dynamic Duo is, for my money, as original today as Pixar was when they did Toy Story so we're really excited about that. Obviously, Man of Tomorrow's in post [production] right now."

Don't see Batman or Constantine. I'll take a shot in the dark and say Flash.

A goofball Batman would be appropriate for Gunn's DCU.

@Lisa89 - he should go full Adam West with it

I don't rate Powell as an actor and always found him a bit smarmy. So I would not be on board 😂

Between this possibility and Muschietti directing, I can't think of any way to make TBATB sound less exciting, especially compared to The Batman crime saga.

@MCUKnight11 - I don’t see Muschietti directing this nor do I feel Powell will be Bats but we’ll see…

I know some don’t like it but I hope the concept of it being a father & son story with Bruce and Damian sticks since it’s a fresh approach to big screen live action Batman imo.

He seems more suitable for BOOSTER GOLD than Batman!

I don't see him getting it before someone like Brandon Sklenar or Tom Brittney.

He’d be terrific as Booster Gold but it is James Gunn so could be Alan Scott or Lightray or Mad Hatter.

He’s so wrong for Batman but as Constantine?? Just cause of the blonde hair?? Please!

He would be a fine booster gold or maybe even bat for the fences and cast him as animal man

I just really don't find him to be a good actor.. I've yet to see him im something that I can buy into his performance. He just always feels like he's acting rather than giving me reason to buy into his character being real...if that makes sense.

Not a huge fan of his work, but he could be a good Flash or Booster Gold.

I like how every time an actor or actress is rumored for the DCU, everyone jumps to Batman and Wonder Woman, as if there aren't hundreds of other characters they can play.

@TheJok3r - Especially considering how they've leaned heavily into the more obscure characters and deep cuts from comics.

I don’t see him as Batman but there’s a few roles I could see.

I hope we get Green Arrow soon.

He's a really smiley guy, and I just don't see him as a brooding character like Batman. Definitely fits the superhero genre with his looks and personality. But there's certainly a better character for him to play than ol' Bats. If they went with an Adam West Batman he'd probably be perfect haha.

I actually think he would be a good Harvey Dent. His whole persona and acting style kind of gives me Aaron Eckhart vibes when he was younger and who I think killed it in Dark Knight.

Meh, he's Booster. Definitely not Bruce and he made himself even more unappealing by going with the psycho Keaton take.

Growing up in the 90s, my ideal DCU would be literally Justice League/Justice League Unlimited in live action. In my mind, you can't get much better than Kevin Conroy as Batman so I don't really see Glenn Powell in that role. But I think he would be a fantastic Wally West. There are plenty of moments from his work that resemble Rosenbaum's take on The Flash. Lean into that and you're golden, IMO. Or cast him as Booster Gold and partner him with Blue Beetle to bring in that character.

IMO they need someone who's voice naturally rests as a baritone but can bring it up for the facade of Bruce Wayne. Couple that with someone who can finesse that dramatic shift in duality through their acting and you're set.
