Joaquin Phoenix Will Still Play THE JOKER Despite Jared Leto's Version Getting His Own Spinoff

Joaquin Phoenix Will Still Play THE JOKER Despite Jared Leto's Version Getting His Own Spinoff

We learned yesterday that Jared Leto is getting a Suicide Squad spinoff of his own but what does that mean for the standalone origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix? Apparently, it's still happening...

When it was revealed last night that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a Joker movie starring Jared Leto, many fans pointed out that it had to mean the standalone origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix was surely no longer happening. After all, surely the studio wouldn't be daft enough to release two different movies with two different actors about the same character within a short space of time?

Apparently so, because Deadline reports that Todd Phillips' movie is indeed still happening. That will fall under what the trade describes as "a different DC origins cinematic banner." Phoenix is also still attached to star. To call this decision baffling would be an understatement but given what little we know about the origin story, it doesn't exactly sound like it will be faithful to the comic books anyway!

What Warner Bros. doesn't seem to understand is that what fans really want is to see The Joker taking on Batman regardless of whether that's Phoenix's version in an 80s setting or Leto's in the present day. As of right now, though, it doesn't look like that's happening. How do you guys feel about this news? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on these Joker movies in the comments section below.

Are rumors confirmation now?

@Knightstar - Yes. Rumors are now facts. This is the world we live in. Happy trails.

@Knightstar - Even though these are rumors I do feel like DC could benefit from a DC Alternate film franchise with Thomas Wayne (Batman) highlighting that universe with an alternate Joker and a more violent Gotham.

But this would set the grounds for the Flashpoint movie with Ezra Miller and have his solo Flash film allude to an alternate reality.

This would then set up a Flashpoint trilogy with Barry teaming up with Thomas Wayne in a war torn earth where Wonder Woman is at war with Atlantis and Reverse-flash unites with The Joker.

@Knightstar -

For Josh? It sure as hell is! How else do you think he's gonna publish a brand new article with actual news that has zero clickbait lines in it?

@Knightstar - it has not been "officially confirmed" by WB yet. Similarly, the "Obi-Wan" film was never confirmed by Lucas Arts either. Lots of journalists are posting news without a confirmation so take it with a grain of salt.

Then again WB is about to be acquired by at&t so pissed off employees who are going to lose their jobs prob leaked it.

@SonOfAGif - This sounds like a great idea. Not done in such a way before so it would be something special if done right.

@SonOfAGif - As cool as a Thomas Wayne arc drawn out over a few movies would be, that isn't how flashpoint works.

That reality exists only because Barry breaks his timeline. He didn't run to a preexisting alternate universe. It would take away from the shock of the premise; that a small change creates large scale effects even in the history of the new timeline before the change.

@MyBeard - And since when has the DCEU respected the source material?

@SonOfAGif - Fair enough. I was just hoping they would for this one since the idea is pretty unique.

@Knightstar - Yes. In today's world, rumors are confirmation and accusations are evidence. Still no BTTF-style hover-boards or flying cars, though.

@baldowl - Oh, crap. I meant Joaquin. I mean, I guess we'd all like to have had more with River Phoenix, too, but dang.
Been a long day.

@Toecutter - He isn't. This is a Josh Wilding article so rumor and speculation is confirmation in his book.

I must have missed when it was 100% officially confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix would be play Joker in this "mature" DC fold banner slate of movies.

I don't really care about seeing Batman vs Joker again because it has been done a lot from the comics to the animated shows and the live actions. So the sentiment goes to this as well even if it is played by a good actor like he is. I'd rather get something else.

@NinnesMBC - Yeah. And we basically got the two quintessential Jokers with Ledger and Nicolson.
JonAwesome
JonAwesome - 6/6/2018, 2:50 PM
@NinnesMBC - they should do a movie where Batman has to team up with the joker for some insane reason and then Joker has a plan all along to double cross the Bat! I would love to see that dynamic where Batman has to get rough with the joker while still needing him and keeping him from killing people along the way!
