Joaquin Phoenix Still Won't Confirm JOKER Movie Talks, But Does Admit That It'd Be An "Interesting" Role

If Joaquin Phoenix really is in talks to play the Clown Prince of Crime in The Hangover director Todd Philips' upcoming Joker origin movie, he's doing a pretty good job of keeping schtum about it...

There have been several recent reports that Todd Philips' standalone Joker movie was zeroing in on Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here, Walk The Line) to portray the iconic Batman villain, but the Academy Award-nominated actor still hasn't confirmed (though he hasn't outright denied, either) that he's been in talks.

FAN-ART: Check Out Several Different Artistic Interpretations Of Joaquin Phoenix As THE JOKER

The last time Phoenix was asked about the rumor he denied all knowledge of it, but during an interview with Fandango, he does admit that playing the character "could be interesting" while sporting a "mischievous grin on his face."

Phoenix continued by reiterating that he's not opposed to starring in a big comic book/superhero movie per se; it's simply a case of never having been offered a role or film in that genre that he was really interested in:

“I see it as any other movie. I wouldn’t say… “I won’t do Westerns.” It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie. There are things where I’ve flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be… something that’s actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that’s key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f**king work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”

If Warner Bros.' Joker origin film has managed to pique the notoriously picky actor's interest, there's a good chance the script is of a very high quality.

At any rate, we'll just have to wait and see if we get some kind of official confirmation of Phoenix's involvement. In the meantime, let us know what you make of his comments in the usual place.

He seems to be such a weird and eccentric guy. But he's a fantastic actor...I bet he would be a great Joker with the right material to work with (Long Halloween-ish)...

@LordHarryLatts - I still can't really see him in the role. Especially an origin film where he's supposed to be younger than Leto. But he is a great actor with some serious range. And when you get down to it this isn't the most complex role. He'd just need to add his own spin to it. And we've been wrong before like with Ledger.

@LordHarryLatts - I'd go with Lovers and Madmen more than anything else. I don't know if you have read it, but I highly recommend doing so. It's from Academy Award nominated writer Michael Green and it's the best Joker origin story I've ever read.

Scorsese and Phoenix is a combination I'd be interested to see.

doubt the movie will happen anytime soon. just a project WB is considering as an idea, but not the one they would greenlight. Wb is considering many projects but priority for now are WW2 and Flashpoint i guess. and of course Ssquad 2 because first one was box office hit. then they got Aquaman and Shazam to finish. that's a top five. even Batman solo adventure remains to be uncertain at this point.

Just annoys the f*ck out of me that WB are only making this film in an attempt to replicate that Dark Knight hype because hey everyone knows and loves the joker right?

@manofillintent1 - I don’t know.
Doesn’t it seem there is a healthy market place for Anti-Hero/Villain stories lately?

In Star Wars...
Tarkin has his own book.
Thrawn has his own books and comics.
Del Torro wanted a Jabba Movie.
Boba Fett almost had a movie.

Sony is Doing Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable.

WB has Suicide Squad

Fox and Noah Hawley are working on a Doctor Doom Movie.

Doing a Joker movie really falls in line with what everyone else is working on.

@IronGenesis - I’d still rather watch half of the movies you’ve mentioned that don’t exist yet over another joker crime drama in a world where TDK already exists

@manofillintent1 -

This is the idiocy of the DCEU. Just go back and build around the Dark Knight Trilogy. They have and continue to waste time and money undoing the goodwill that those films created with these ignorant ideas that is a desperate attempt to just circle back to the formula that made them great instead of doing just doing what they should have done in the first place.

Scorcese should renake Strangers on a Train. I rewtached his Cape Fear remake the other day. A classic.

I think he would do a great job making a modern Strangers On A Train.

Joaquin Phoenix may be my favorite male actor. But I don’t trust him for a second on this project until he has green hair.

Look at this quote he gave with an interview with Will Ferrell.

PHOENIX: I usually have a very strong desire to participate in an experience, and then shortly thereafter, I have an overwhelming desire to move as far away from it as possible. And then I try to get out of doing it.

FERRELL: That’s your pattern, right? As it gets eminently closer, you’re like, “You know what? Maybe get someone else.”

PHOENIX: What usually happens is I start to think about other actors who would be so much better than me.

FERRELL: But you’re so good!

PHOENIX: “I’m going to ruin this movie! This is a great director’s great script, and I’m just going to [frick] everything up. They should get someone else.”

This is from interview magazine and I think sums Phoenix up. Probably why he wasn’t Doctor Strange and why I am skeptical he will be The Joker.

@IronGenesis - Probably why he didn't take on the Lex Luthor role. Even though he would have killed it as the character.
