In what appears to be another attempt to beat the paparazzi to the punch, Joker director Todd Philips has shared a new BTS photo of Joaquin Phoenix as The Clown Prince of Crime... emphasis on the clown.

As filming continues on Todd Philips' mysterious Joker origin film, the director has shared another behind-the-scenes photo to Instagram.

There's speculation that the plot will take influence from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke in its re-imagining of The Joker as a failed stand-up comedian who has "one bad day" that pushes him over the edge, and these follow-up photos of Arthur Fleck having a meltdown after a phonecall might just back that up:

@thewanderer - DC Universe has been imploding. No expectations for this film, but it will be a hell of a lot better than Eurotrash Joker with Leto.

Yup.
He's gonna snap while in that regular clown fit and do something unspeakable while still in make-up.
He'll look at himself in the mirror like, "what did I do, this isn't me"......"it was the clown!"
Then he'll continue on with the make-up as it's a mask in itself and will be, in his head, the Joker committing the crimes, not Fleck.

This is all piecing together really, really well.

I was hoping this movie would showcase the evolution of the Joker look. I was hoping that Subway look was just the first shown of many different looks he will have in the movie. I think it would be sweet if every time he puts on the makeup it was different. Different styles, different colors, different designs... until the last scene of the movie which showcases the more traditional look. But the makeup getting more creepy and more Joker iconic style as he slips further and further into madness. And the director will release an image of him in eac new look the day before they film that new look. But say he has 5 or 7 different looks each time he does up the makeup.

@regularmovieguy - personally, I'm hoping the film itself will have a Natural Born Killers vibe where the cinematography and editing gives the feeling the audience watching is crazy or on drugs, very surreal and trippy colors as Arthur slips deeper into madness.

@regularmovieguy - For Real. God damn. This clip. Love it. That eyebrow raise to seriousness. So damned cool. And Phoenix?? Can’t believe such a great actors-actor has taken on this role. Who would have guessed THIS character, of all comic characters, is sought out by Oscar winning actors. It must be a balls out hoot to be able to have those near limitless range to playa character. What other opportunities are there to give a bonafide, full tilt “evil madman laugh” without looking like a dickhead? The Joker is madness. Methodical while somehow finding a way to laugh at the absurdities of it all.
