JOKER Director Todd Phillips Has Reportedly Signed On To Co-Write The Sequel

We recently learned that Warner Bros. was indeed moving forward with a direct sequel to 2019's Joker, and a new report now claims that director Todd Phillips has signed on to co-write the script...

It looks like Todd Phillips may be set to return for Joker 2, but not as director.

THR reports that the filmmaker has closed a deal to co-write the planned sequel, which we recently learned was officially in development at Warner Bros. The news is buried in the trade's piece on "Hollywood's Top 100 Lawyers" (for some reason), so it's probably best to take it with a grain of salt until we hear more.

Shortly after Joker laughed its way past $1 billion at the global box office back in 2019, it was reported that Phillips was set to re-team with star Joaquin Phoenix for a direct follow-up to the controversial film. However, both he and Phoenix later denied any involvement in a potential sequel, and it was put down to a case of crossed wires until THR (again) revealed that Joker 2 was indeed in the works last month.

It's odd that there still hasn't been a a bigger announcement relating to the sequel, but it could be a case of deals still needing to be finalized. Whatever the case may be, there's no smoke without fire, so we'll just have to hope that more details are revealed soon.

This seems like a bad choice. I didn't like joker, but I get what it was trying to do. A sequel feels wrong imo

@TheMapleSyrup - Because it is. Everything doesn't need a trilogy or the sequel already in the works.

@SuperIronman12 - lol. Joker would be in his 60's or even older by the time Batman shows up in Gotham.

@CorndogBurglar - It could work if he was a old but agile joker or make batman azartah or or a random person does not need to be bruce he can just fund the batman.

I thought Joker was solid. I wouldn't mind the same grounded take with a character like Bane.

I wasn't a fan of the original. It was a good movie, but it just felt like it was supposed to be something else and they just slapped Batman related names into it to say it was DC's Joker. Nothing about it made me feel like I was watching a DC related film. Even the Joker himself was far too sympathetic and didn't seem like the criminal mastermind that would go toe to toe with Batman.

On the contrary to what we saw. We already had this concept of “multiple choice” for an origin story demonstrated by seeing that Arthur’s pivotal moments could have been true or made up in his head due to his psyche.

I think if they do this sequel, we should see the same character going through an alternate origin, that is similar to the first but already has established a Bat Like Creature making waves in Gotham. Perhaps we see him involved with some gangsters who want him to don a Red Hood persona.

We saw the person aspiring to be a Comedian.

Let’s see him don the Hood Persona in some fashion, and possibly run into Batman.

@SatsuiNoJXA - If there has to be sequel, something like this I can see. I’d be interested in a Scarface-like gangster movie with the Joker as the Red Hood.

@SatsuiNoJXA - How about doing Patton Oswalt's interpretation of Heath Ledger's origin as a military interrogator who realises that the system is one big joke?

That one really intrigued me and would be tonally different from the first one.

Maybe get Patton Oswalt to co-write? That'd be dope.

Also it'd give Joaquin a new character to get into. he also said that he took on the Joker as a tribute to Heath. This would be an even bigger tribute.

I absolutely wanna see a sequel and hope they will make Harley Quinn a central part of it. Their relationship and history would make a perfect, twisted character study like the first one.

To me, Joker was like an excellent one-shot comic. It works well as a standalone movie but I loved Phillips’ gritty 1980s Gotham and would like to see how other characters from the Batman mythos play out in this world.

Hopefully this movie will show Arthur grow into the criminal mastermind from the comics. I feel we didn’t really get that in the first one. Arthur was violent and mentally disturbed but there is room to grow.

Has WB even confirmed that this movie is happening? THR is a reliable source but they also reported that a sequel was happening before WB told that it wasn’t.
