2019's Joker didn't adhere to the comic books and delivered a unique, standalone interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime and his origin story.
That proved to be far from a bad thing, of course, and while Todd Phillips' movie was lacking when it came to faithfulness to the source material, it more than made up for that with a compelling, often haunting approach to Arthur Fleck's villainous transformation.
This unique approach to the classic comic book villain will continue in Joker: Folie à Deux, and we now have photos and footage from the Los Angeles set. In the Tweets below, Joaquin Phoenix can be seen running panicked through Gotham City seemingly pursued by copycat Jokers.
One looks exactly as Fleck did in the first movie's final act, and we can't help but wonder whether this might all be in the villain's head. After all, he's expected to remain within the confines of Arkham Asylum in this follow-up (where he'll meet fellow patient Harley Quinn), though it would definitely be interesting to see what happens to Gotham if they escape!
Back in 2019, Joker became the first R-Rated blockbuster to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
As of right now, it's the only movie based on a DC Comics character currently heading our way in 2024, with 2025 set to be when DC Studios kicks off the new DCU in earnest with Superman: Legacy.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after Joker debuted.
