The Toronto International Film Festival has officially announced the movies that will premiere as part of the Gala and Special Presentations programmes, and Todd Philips' Joker is among them.

We had been led to believe that the standalone origin story for the deranged Batman villain would first screen at the Venice Film Festival which gets underway late next month, and while that's still a possibility, North American fans hoping to get an early look at the controversial film will have to wait a little longer as TIFF kicks-off on September 5.

Other movies featured as part of the Gala Presentation include Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat and James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari. You'll find a full rundown right here.

Tell us, any plans to travel to Toronto to catch Joker before it hits theaters on October 4? Drop us a comment down below, and have a scroll through some hi-res screengrabs from the first trailer.

"North American Premiere" means that it's all but confirmed to debut at Venice. Joaquin could actually score a nom for this, damn.

Also, holy [frick]ing shitballs is this an amazing TIFF lineup:
Uncut Gems, Ford v Ferrari, The Lighthouse, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, Bad Education, Joker, Just Mercy, The Laundromat, Parasite, Pain & Glory, Motherless Brooklyn

@tmp3 - Only curious about Ford v Ferrari, Knives Out and this one.

@NinnesMBC - Jojo Rabbit's the new Taika Waititi film, so I think some people on this site would be interested in that, and Just Mercy is from the director of Shang Chi and stars B. Jordan & Brie Larson. Bad Education's got Huge Jacked Man, and I've heard the script's pretty great.

@tmp3 - Yeah a lot of people certainly would like Taika Waititi's new work before Love and Thunder comes out and also if Destin Daniel Cretton's projects. Hugh Jackman is always welcomed with whatever he does too.

@tmp3 - Didn't realize how much of a palate cleanser I need on content.
Man shall not live on superheroes and shitty fairy tale remakes, alone.

@Battabing - Why the [frick] did you pay to see Lion King? If you paid hard money on Lion King and not the new Tarantino film I feel like you're not allowed to criticize the state of Hollywood at all.

Exactly what I wanted from a comic book movie. Thank you, WB.

@Spock0Clock - I mean... the last time Joaquin Phoenix played a mentally unstable man taking care of his old mom, it turned out to be one of the best films of 2018

I have a feeling this movie will be good ... but not Oscar good. I was first opposed to this but I am a bit intrigued.
