Oscars 2020: AVENGERS: ENDGAME Misses Out On Best Picture Nod But JOKER Leads Charge With 11 Nominations

The nominations are in for the 92nd Academy Awards and while Avengers: Endgame was unable to break into the "Best Picture" list, there was still plenty of good news for comic book movies...and Star Wars!

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards have just gone live, and as is often the case, we're left with plenty to discuss! For starters, Joker is leading the charge with a whopping 11 nominations, including "Best Picture," "Best Actor," and "Best Director." As for Avengers: Endgame, the superhero epic has only been nominated for "Best Visual Effects" as it was locked out of the bigger categories.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also received three nominations in lesser categories, but it's Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, The Irishman, and 1917 that tied with ten total nominations each.

This year's Oscars will take place on February 9th and, like last year, there will be no host.

Joker now becomes the first DC Comics adaptation to be nominated for "Best Picture," and it's only the second superhero movie to achieve that honor (the first being Black Panther).

Phillips getting a best director nom over The Safdie Bros is a shame. And best screenplay is a bit much too, but everything else is right on the money for Joker.

@BlackBeltJones - I think he could’ve easily beaten two nominations there as well.

@BlackBeltJones - dont think i can ever buy him as a dramatic actor

@dracula - when he actually tries, he really KILLS IT. He's amazing in Uncut Gems.

@BlackBeltJones - maybe ill check it out, but i have sat through a lot of crap Sandler comedies. After seeing the trailers for Jack and Jill, not sure how i can take him seriously. Maybe uncut jems can win me over

@dracula - I'm not a fan of his comedies either. last one I enjoyed was the Murder Mystery one, which was a lot of fun.

Were people really expecting Endgame to get best picture/acting Oscar nominations? Infinity War was an arguably better film (I loved Endgame) but it only got a VFX nomination.

@santoanderson - Infinity War was definitely the more enjoyable of the two in my opinion. I’ve only seen Endgame once since I saw it in theaters

My favorite male and female performances this year were De Niro and Awkwafina, so of course they didn't get nominated lol. Joaquin's a [frick]ing beast though, absolutely deserves the win if he gets it. If Driver wins, that'd be well deserved too; really competitive year.

@tmp3 - I didn't notice Awkwafina didn't get nominated. What a goddamn shame.

Also, The Two Popes is the feature film equivalent of reading a Wikipedia article, so to see Pryce nominated for doing an impression of the Pope over De Niro's lived-in performance that spanned decades is pretty lame. Especially with that phone call scene he had with Hoffa's wife.

@Necropolitan - Farewell sneakily grew in appreciation from me ever since I saw it, to the point where it might even be in my top 3 of 2019 in retrospect. What a revelation she was though, hope Marvel gives her a lot to play with in Shang Chi

@tmp3

The Farewell getting snubbed was a big surprise.
