While it was initially reported that
Joker had once again won the weekend at the North American box office, the final numbers are in and it turns out that
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was the victor.
We knew from the start that it was a close race, but the Disney movie earned $19.37 million compared to the DC Comics adaptation's $19.248 million. The fact that
Joker was #2 - and very nearly #1 - during its fourth weekend of release is not something to be sniffed at and its worldwide numbers are bound to have made Warner Bros. very happy indeed.
Right now,
Joker sits at the $852 million mark at the global box office and it's also the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all-time. Many analysts remain confident it will near the $1 billion mark.
Interestingly, some of the trade's sources believe that the $122,000 difference between
Joker and
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil means it was a "virtual tie" for #1. This weekend,
Terminator: Dark Fate will earn the top spot and seeing as that's also R-Rated, it will be interesting to see how it fares.
