More Of Hollywood's Finest Give Their Take On Christopher Nolan's BATMAN Movies

We have already heard from the likes of Tim Burton (Director - Batman, Batman Returns), Zack Snyder (Director - Watchmen, Man Of Steel), David Koepp (Writer - Jurassic Park, Spider-Man), Drew Goddard (Director - The Cabin In The Woods), and Rupert Wyatt (Director - Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. But to celebrate the realese of The Dark Knight Rises, Empire have gathered together quotes from quite a few more Hollywood directors, writers, and producers to give their takes on Christopher Nolan's Batman movies - in particular The Dark Knight, which of course leads directly into this upcoming threequel.

Adam McKay (Director - Anchorman)

"The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie ever made. I've seen others that try to get all real, and they strip away the fun and the mythology. And then I've seen movies that go too far towards the cartoon aspect. But Nolan, with mathematical precision, blended the two. The way he shoots is such a throwback, and yet so modern. He's using old-fashioned techniques with modern ideas. Amazing."

David Koepp (Writer - Jurassic Park, Spider-Man)

"To me, what was most fascinating is I have two teenage boys and watching the reverence with which they saw it, again and again and again. It really is like their generation's Godfather. It is absolutely a seminal film for teenage boys of that and this era. If I told you I knew why, I'd be lying. It's lightning in a bottle, and you can never explain it. Great script, top-level performances... It just completely connected to something."

Neil Marshal (Director - The Descent, Game Of Thrones)

"When I first saw it, to be honest, I couldn't account for its huge success. My first impression was that it was long-winded and way too serious for its own good. I've since watched it quite a few times on Blu-ray and I've really come to appreciate both its cinematic craft and its intelligence — it's certainly not frivolous. I think that's what ultimately gives it such lasting appeal. Sure, it's really just about a guy who dresses up as a bat, but it's such a smart, beautifully made movie about a guy who dresses up as a bat! It definitely raised the bar for modern blockbusters. Maybe too high, since so few have ever come close!"

Peter Berg (Director - Hancock, Battleship)

"Christopher Nolan has a very special skillset. He's just got an eye and a unique tone — I mean, he had it starting with Memento and he hasn't really let up. He's a real talent and I think you've gotta look to his creative vision for the success of The Dark Knight. What he did with Heath Ledger just from a make-up and wardrobe standpoint was mesmerising. Christopher Nolan has demonstrated a clarity and a vision that no-one else has with that particular property."

Wes Anderson (Director Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom)

"I enjoy Chris Nolan's work in general, but I watched the Blu-Ray and it has a thing where you can go to any scene in the movie and go to the making of that. There's nothing that has ever made me feel less like a professional than watching Chris Nolan's group at work. The remote-control miniature cars. Just every technique. The rehearsal of flipping the semi-trailer end over end in the middle of the desert before they blow it up in Chicago... There's one scene where a guy jumps off the top of a skyscraper — they rehearse the jump but for the actual thing they did it CG. 'But for the rehearsal you did jump off the building?' 'We have it as a reference.' Wow. Chris Nolan is quite great. My favourite is Memento, but I'd like to learn how to do these things."

What be Peter Berg's quote? I wonder if he blames this one, too, for the failure of Battleship... :P

Great stuff, though. Won't it be interesting to hear from more? I'd love to see Joss Whedon's comment.

@pux Burtons "Batman" was not Batman...Nolans was.
Nicholsons Joker was Nicholson nothing really mind blowing about that performance. I actually am not a fan of Heath Ledgers at all, but when I saw his Joker, I SAW the Joker.

Success does not make a good film, the transformers movies were successful. YOUR argument is invalid.

Those who read the comics & graphic novels always wanted movies of Batman to have the tone and treatment that the books did. This trilogy did it justice.

Tim Burton / cast & crew may have had financial success with those films but never quite nailed the true essence of Batman & his world like Chris Nolan / cast & crew did.

Hate to see it end but glad it was worthy...hopefully the future Batman films will continue in this tradition.

Burton's batmans are great, there is also a twenty year gap between each series people.you must be pretty young if you don't respect Burton's batman, Nolan wouldn't be making batman movies if it were not for Burton's take.

He he he, what a load of silliness they're talking. It was a great CBM, end off. They need to pull their heads out of Nolans anus.

I preferred Tim Burton's versions (:
they were way more fun and had a good comicbook quirkiness.

Bottom line, I love the films. I don't care who the director is. Have a good script and movie, and I'll be happy.
Only thing I do and wished for is a shared DC universe. If that's my only complaint, I'm happy.

In 10 years, people will be writing the same tripe about Nolan that people do today about Burton, Raimi, etc.

Fans are fickle and have a short memory of how the release impacted the genre at the time.

Not to mention some are young and were not there when it happened.

The release of Tim Burton's Batman was HUGE at the time. Had never seen a movie that sold out days in advance. The merchandizing, the hype, I have not seen it's equal in quie some time. Everyone was talking about it, getting the gear, etc.

Same with Raimi's Spiderman....huge hype.

Point being, Nolan's Batman movies are awesome. But a year after this movie is out, it will most likely just be mentioned in lists, polls, and other crap. The Nolanites will have to be silent till they can hop on the Snyder bandwagon cause their god is helping produce that movie.

Who knows? Maybe Nolan will do Inception 2 :)

@ Vegakingblade you do realize Burton's Batman was a killer? You might prefer Burton's take and that's your opinion but his take on Batman wasn't closer to comics than Nolan's Batman.

@sirwisalot, no you dont, burton was the one who created the dark batman on screen, Schumacher wasn't, if a new gay batman comes out than ya shucker can take credit. Do you not know how credit works? Hah

@Nomis

78 Superman STILL gets me hyped :) The whole intro with the screen rolling up and the visuals of the credits. Epic music, etc.

Going to one of my points, Burton's Batman was sweet cause I had a car and remember the lines to get tickets at the theatres. Think I even had a Batman velcro wallet :)

And Prince at the height of his popularity brought us an awesome soundtrack to go with the score.

There have been some rumors that David Letterman has seen The Dark Knight Rises, and may have revealed what happens to Batman at the end of the movie.

No way in this world was Burton's Batman better. His Joker was basically Jack dressed in a Joker costume. It was same Jack voice and mannerisms. Ledger was unrecognizable as the Joker. Ledger was a completely different person as the Joker. Batman Begins was better then the original and Returns. The Joker killed Batman's parents, please that's the most far off thing from the comics I've seen.

Since Batman killed Two Face in the last movie, does that make Nolan's Batman a killer too? xP

I love Burton's movies as a kid they where like my favorites. Loved em mostly for their visual aesthetic, twisted humor, score, and it was BATMAN! Will always have a special place in my heart for nostalgic reason.

These are my favorite Batman films now. They are much closer to what Batman is to me though visually it might not be.
They are more complex, thrilling, just better written stories. It sounds silly to take Batman serious but its not to me. I love em!

I mean as a kid, even, i liked taking comic books and cartoons serious.

Why not make the movies that way once in a while?

I can't see Burton's Batman films the same anymore. That's not Batman. Batman isn't a killer. My absolute favorite take on Batman is Kenvin Conroy Arkham City. Even after all the chaos he still would have tried to save the joker.

I do not even count Burton's incarnation as Batman...they were garbage and unwatchable. The first one was tepid at best and Batman Returns is junk and Burton has only made one movie since then that I would bother to watch again: Sleepy Hollow.

Nolan's is the definitive Batman but I also look forward to the reboot and a new actor/director combo.

No one has gotten Superman exactly right either, but here is hoping that Man of Steel can accomplish what Nolan has with Bats.

I'll bet my next paycheck that 99% of the rubes here ripping Burton's 2 Batman films are under the age of 30 and have no real reference to the time period in which they were created. If you saw it when you were 7 or some $hit you probably missed the deeper aspects of it and realized only the comic book facets of it.

It was the first time Batman was properly portrayed in live action, erasing decades of stigma created by the campy 60's tv show. He was the obsessed, brooding Dark Knight that the books had portrayed since the 70's. Every bit as worthy of praise as the current Nolan\Bale incarnation.

and no he wasn't "Kanes early batman carrying a gun and no remorse for killing". Not sure what the hell you were watching there nomis but it sure wasn't these films. A zip line is not a gun and he didn't shoot anybody.

I like burton´s bat movies, but they were becoming more burton than batman.. under burton, batman 3 would have been a gothic tale with jhonny deep as batman. then schumacher killed the character and nolan brought it back (talking about movies, not the other media) but then the movies became more nolan than batman: crime dramas with characters that happen to have the same name (and in catwoman´s case, not even that) of batman characters.. so it's time for a change again.

he said one of the main things people have pretty much been saying since the movie was announced.
