The Batman Part II Production Paused After Director Matt Reeves Steps Away To Focus On A "Family Matter"

The Batman Part II has already been delayed multiple times, but even the movie's 2028 release date may not stick after filmmaker Matt Reeves has had to pause production due to a family matter.

Deadline has confirmed that production has been paused on The Batman Part II. Filmmaker Matt Reeves is said to be stepping away for personal reasons, which, understandably, have not been disclosed at this time.

You may recall claims that the reason the sequel's script was coming together so slowly was because Reeves may have been dealing with a serious personal issue. Those rumours have resurfaced today, but whatever the case may be, we're wishing the director and his family all the best at this time.

Confirming the news, DC Studios shared a brief statement with the trade, stating, "Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."

Filming had been underway in London before production was halted ahead of a planned February 18, 2028 release (before multiple delays, the movie had been scheduled to open last week). According to this report, "Sources say it is too early to say whether the stoppage will have an effect on the release date."

There's a huge amount of excitement for The Batman Part II, especially as there's still nothing to suggest the DCU has found its Caped Crusader (The Brave and the Bold has seemingly fallen by the wayside since being announced at the start of 2023).

"It’s so ambitious," Robert Pattinson recently said of Reeves' sequel. "I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another. It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out."

Only time will tell what happens to The Batman and when production will resume. It's not easy bringing work on a major blockbuster to a halt, so as frustrating as any potential delay may be, it's extremely important to remember that whatever's happening with Reeves is likely very serious.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script by him and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Batman Part II is set to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.

Hope everything is alright with his family. It would be a shame to delay this for the eighth time.

@InfinitePunches - everyone just needs to relax, DC already has a GOAT director for hire that has a perfect track record in this industry with zero controversy (probably, I don't read many articles with too many words)

He saved Justice League, this is his second chance.... Or like, his 5th or 6th chance.

He's got this.

@Batmandalorian - At this stage I really do wonder.... i mean obviously something's going on, but it had been for a while and the fact that they allowed him the time to com back with the sequel meant they probably thought it was handled and ok for him to still be in charge of such a massive production.

@Batmandalorian - guess the wife kicked him to the curb again. This reminds me of the time @originalgusto1 got kicked out of his ex wife's garage because she found out he was using it to film a sequel to Batsquirt Begins. Unfortunately, that film never made it to release. Let's hope Matt's sequel fares better than Gusto's.

Family over film, but...wow. These Batman films just do not want to be made.

I know it's not in the cards, but Pattinson is such an auteur that I would have the utmost confidence in him taking over creative control of the franchise.

Damn , I hope everything is ok with Reeves and his family since we had rumblings when the script was taking so long that it might have been due to personal reasons aswell…

As much as I want to see this film as a big fan of the first one and The Penguin , it’s not that important so he should take care of his business and come back when he can.

I do hope things get back to normal quickly and production resumes sooner then later so fingers crossed!!.

This will definitely be the last Pattinson Batman movie.

Other than that..it takes as long as it takes.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/5/2026, 2:49 PM
@UnderBelly - Not if it makes a billion. No one will care how long it takes to make as long as it makes money and is really good.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/5/2026, 3:10 PM
@TheJok3r - I doubt they'll give Matt the keys again. And if he's out Pattinson is out and then Gunn will no more excuses to get Brave And the Bold going.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/5/2026, 3:19 PM
@UnderBelly - Studios care about three things:

1- Does it make money ?

2- Does the public like it ?

3- Do the critics like it ?

If the answer to these three questions is a yes, and there's no reason to believe otherwise, then the studio will not care if it takes longer than desired to get out the door.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/5/2026, 3:32 PM
@TheJok3r - Then why did Nolan not come back for a fourth Batman?

Where's Barbie 2? Or even the sequel to Disney's live action Jungle book?

Those all made money, the critics liked them, thr public liked them..

There'll always be Batman in cinema but I doubt after this one Reeve and Pattinson will return. It will over to Gunn or whoever they decide on to direct and write it.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/5/2026, 3:36 PM
@UnderBelly - Because Nolan finished his story; there was nothing to come back to. WB tried hard to get him and Bale to continue, but they both refused. As for Barbie, that's getting off the ground now, although it took longer than expected because they didn't want to pay the two leads what they wanted. Gunn has nothing that can make anywhere near as much as Batman II can, so unless the decision is made by Reeves himself not to return, then there's no reason to believe WB will pull the plug on this if it performs as well as I think it will.
UnderBelly

@TheJok3r - You're shifting the goalposts here—it clearly met all three criteria.
Also, Warner Bros. no longer exists as an independent entity in terms of ownership; it's now under Skydance. Gunn and Safran are steering DC Studios, but they likely inherited contractual constraints from prior deals. That explains why The Batman Part II retained its green light and why Gunn couldn't completely disavow films like The Flash or Wonder Woman right away.
DC Studios is deliberately pacing their Batman strategy to avoid market saturation and competing on-screen iterations—especially after The Flash featured two Batmen and still bombed.
By the time The Batman Part II arrives, six years will have passed since the original film and nearly as long since DC Studios was established. Leaving their flagship, most profitable character on the sidelines for that long isn't sustainable, and they certainly won't grant Reeves that kind of timeline again.
The delay-heavy production process makes a third installment a liability DC Studios won't want to carry. A trilogy completion under Reeves looks highly unlikely, and he may very well announce his exit himself to control the narrative.
The only plausible scenario for Pattinson staying on is if a new director replaces Reeves, builds a strong rapport with the studio, and fast-tracks a script to put a third film into production the same year Part II releases—but that remains a long shot

@UnderBelly - "Leaving their flagship, most profitable character on the sidelines for that long isn't sustainable, and they certainly won't grant Reeves that kind of timeline again."

That's almost how long Spider-Man was "left on the sideline", and we all know how that turned out with Brand New Day. With that said, I think Reeves will have a co-director on Part III who shares his vision to ensure this doesn't happen again.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/5/2026, 4:22 PM
@TheJok3r - That comparison doesn't work.
Sony’s original attempt to bring back Sam Raimi fell through, leading to the Marc Webb/Andrew Garfield reboot—a five-year gap driven by a total creative reset.
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the shift to Homecoming took three years.
Between No Way Home and Brand New Day, it was a five-year gap, but that came with changing directors (moving on from Jon Watts) and navigating a complex co-production deal between Sony and Marvel Studios. Honestly, Holland's films likely wouldn't have reached the same level of success without those MCU ties.
Besides, Spider-Man is a completely different business model. Sony holds the movie rights while Marvel Studios produces, creating a very specific dynamic. Sony uses the MCU integration to its advantage, even pulling in characters like Hulk, Punisher, and Jean Grey.
Matt Reeves' The Batman is an isolated, standalone universe. If Skydance wants DC to actually challenge the MCU, they need a main DCU Batman on screen much sooner to build out their core cinematic universe

MarvelZombie616 - 10/6/2026, 2:42 AM
@UnderBelly - Barbie 2 is in development.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/6/2026, 3:31 AM

@MarvelZombie616 - Sure, but it’s still not a fair comparison.

Batman is in a completely different spot because WB (Now Skydance) is trying to build a new shared universe (DCU) while a totally separate, live-action Batman franchise is already running in parallel. James Gunn is obviously going to be hesitant to double up on the Caped Crusader—just look at how The Flash flopped the year after The Batman while trying to market two different Batmen at once.

The only way I see Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson making it to a third film is if Gunn introduces his main DCU Batman first, and the gap between Reeves' 2nd and less possible 3rd movies doesn't stretch past four years at most.

And let’s be real: Gunn isn't going to hold off on casting his flagship Batman until the 2030s just to wait out another trilogy.

Just an educated guess, though

We had that before.

I wish him and his family the very best, but at this point the studio should step in and replace him with somebody else (in fact this should have already happened years in the past).

It is ridiculous to have the first Batman movie in a trilogy in early 2022 and not get the 2nd part 6 years later.

TheJok3r - 10/5/2026, 2:51 PM
@MarvelZombie616 - The movie has been filming for 4 months now, so it wouldn't make sense to take such a drastic measure when there's only a month or two left of filming.

Maybe Matt should just call it and move away from the whole project / projects until he’s ready to start working again. There’s clearly something serious going on behind the scenes and focusing on getting himself healthy should always be the focus no matter what. Having this movie looming as something he ~needs to finish~ probably isn’t going to do him any favors while he’s dealing with whatever serious issues he has going on. I just really hope it’s not something health related.
