VIDEO: Marketing For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Goes Subliminal (Sort Of)

It seems like something strange is going on with the marketing for The Dark Knight Rises in the UK. Channel 4 (the network which recently released a new international trailer for Prometheus) have been flashing the film's logo between commercials and you can see a video of that here.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

During a commercial break of Come Dine With Me on Channel 4 this evening, the logo from The Dark Knight Rises flashed up between each advert, finally culminating with the one labelled "The Legend Ends" as seen in the video below. This may just be a cheap bit of advertising by Warner Bros. in order to increase interest in the movie before they start showing full-length TV spots (seeing the Batman logo continuously flashing up is sure to intrigue anyone that doesn't follow news on the film as closely as the rest of us). On the other hand, it could also be building to something else altogether. Perhaps the release of a brand new trailer (as the network did for Prometheus during the season finale of Homeland) for example? Stay tuned...

Wow this seems really desperate on WB behalf, they're really pulling out all the stops to compete with the avengers success.

i dont see this as desperate Georgep66. this is pretty standard fare now. especially for a film the size of TDKR.

Not subliminal, subliminal advertising is when the viewer is unaware they are being advertised to when the logo is very obvious to the viewer. Besides, here in the UK subliminal advertising is illegal and all ads must here must first go through inspections from the Trading Standards Agency.

They were flashing up during the ad breaks between episodes of How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory on Channel 4's digital channel E4 between 1 and 3pm. But they weren't exactly fast enough to be 'subliminal' - that'd be a single frame lasting a nano-second with no sound flashing up between different ads or in the middle of an ad.

So....basically these ads were to announce that there will be no midnight screenings for TDKR in the U.K.?

You're not really allowed to push subliminal advertising. This is their way of being cute about it. It's subliminal without being subliminal.
