Will Christopher Nolan Kill Off Batman In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?

In the new issue of Empire Magazine there is a great spread on The Dark Knight Rises. The article begins with a chilling quote from screenwriter David Goyer that has to make you wonder.

Shortly after the success of 2008's The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan and David Goyer sat down for lunch to discuss a third Batman film. They ran over ideas, looking for a way to top their last effort. At some point while scarfing down their meals they began to envision the final scene of the third film, that would become The Dark Knight Rises.

"The final scene of The Dark Knight Rises is exactly that scene we talked about then," says Goyer, speaking to Empire from his LA office almost four years later. "It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everthing strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat."

With a hint like that Empire Magazine pressed Goyer a little further.

Nolan, it would seem, is committing commercial sacrilege. "Yup," agrees Goyer.
"That's why it's [frick]ing exciting!"

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

I bet it'll end with the gay green lantern appearing lolz.

I hope he doesn't kill off Batman but it makes sense. I'm sure he doesn't want anybody destroying his batman trilogy.

The Bat Man can never die. he's more than a man . He's a symbol. Bruce Wayne on the other hand can die. He's just a man. Nolan always said that the third film will go full circle with the previous two. Having said that, i think the most important scene in the whole trilogy will be when Ra's Al Ghul is explaining this to Bruce during his training with The League Of Shadows.

Yeah i'm over this series because of their refusal to connect it to a wider DC universe.

I'm just waiting to see how they'll handle the next Batman when they do a World's Finest (hopefully MoS will be great and Cavill will reprise his role as Supes) and then they find a new actor for Batman and move from there.

I'll obviously see TDKR but I'm just over it.

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE ! STOP USING THE TERM "REBOOT" . A REBOOT IS MADE WHEN A FRANCHISE SUCKS. IN THIS CASE IT WILL BE ANOTHER STORYTELLER GIVING HIS/HER TAKE ON THE CHARACTER. DON'T WRITERS AND ARTIST GIVE THEIR OWN TAKE TO CLASSIC CHARACTERS IN THE COMICS ? WELL WITH CBM'S IT'S THE SAME THING. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX . THIS IS THE FUTURE . GIVE ME 10 DIFFERENT TAKES AND I BET THEY WILL ALL BE GREAT IN THEIR RESPECTED UNIVERSE AND SETTING.

Batman cannot be killed, Batman is a symbol, an idea and a legend. That's why Bruce Wayne took on the role, so that he'd be more than a man and he'd be everlasting, something that couldn't be erased. Even if Bruce Wayne dies, the symbol will live.

Yep. Or something just as sacreligious. And we'll all suck his balls for it.
I still can't get over the whole no venom thing, here.
What's next? Superman has no powers, only aids? Is that what we should be expecting here?

I just don't see me giving this film a standing ovation if Batman is killed. Will I say the film was great? Yes. But i won't leave the theater happy. Now if Batman is "killed" but Bruce lives, I will be okay with that. I just don't want him to die. We all know he's fine with sacrificing his life but I don't want to see that happen. Of course it isn't up to me.

I was at pub with my friend this weekend and i mentioned to him that Nolan used A Tale of Two Cities as inspiration, and he immediately said "they're gonna kill Batman".

Nolan can say he's made the best film since the inception of film, claim to have earned the right to bring Batman into day time and he can restrict as many fantasy elements as he wants. But his pants have gotten too big when it comes to killing off Batman. That's where my inner fanboy draws the line. He's made his own Gotham universe and it's own rules and continuity, but no artist owns the right to kill Batman. That happens, one viewing, and I'm done.

Can't see this happening with a RISES theme attached to the film and the fact that it is so anti-climactic and an instant crowd turn-off. Who leaves the theater juiced about a film where Batman dies at the end?

Nah

Killing batman off is sooo easy to end it, and if Nolan would go for that, then he would do it, but its not his style I think.
