Zoe Kravitz Was Told She Was Too "Urban" For A Role In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

In a recent interview with Nylon magazine, Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road, Dope) reveals that she was denied an audition for Christopher Nolan's final Bat-flick based solely on her ethnicity. Click on to find out what she had to say...

26-year-old Zoe Kravitz (daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet) first came to our attention playing Angel Salvador in X-Men: First Class, and has since gone on to give memorable turns in the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, Insurgent, Dope and The Road Within. With several other big movies lined up, Zoe's star is most certainly on the rise, but there was a time when landing the good roles wasn't quite so easy.

In an interview with Nylon the actress recalls losing out on an audition for The Dark Knight Rises, seemingly based on her racial background and nothing else. “In the last Batman movie, they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t ‘going urban,’” she says. “It was like, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?’”

Chances are this was the role of Catwoman's sidekick Juno Temple wound up playing. For the full interview click the link below, and we also have the snaps from Zoe's shoot with Nylon for you to take a look at.

I've seen this floating around didn't want to read it because I knew it wasn't going to be good. If it really went down that way. Casting are an idiots. She's a beautiful talented young actress find a place for her Marvel.

Hollywood loves using that [frick]ing "urban" word. I'm glad she called them out.

From a director that cast a black man as Comish Loeb, Tiny Lister in a memorable role and Spawn as a big time, elite gangster, I'm guessing "urban", considering both of her parents are (I think) half white, wasn't a "general" issue. I'm curious what type of role she tried for or how true this is

If it was Juno's role in TDKR, then I see no problem why it has to be a white girl, Zoe would've been just fine too.
She's an actress and a pretty damn good one at that, she's awesome and I really hope she gets another CBM role in the future because she was wasted in First Class.

Welcome to Hollywood, mother[frick]ers: only token ethnics allowed. I think it's a bigger problem among UK directors, to be honest. Edgar Wright, among others, has been called out as a director who doesn't like to work with people of color because they make him uncomfortable. His track record supports that assessment.

We live in a multicultural country, and I believe our entertainment should reflect that. So-called minorities are not second class citizens, and unless there is a very specific, story-based reason for keeping a character white, people of color should not be excluded from any role. Besides, it makes economic sense to move toward more diverse casts - look at the Fast and the Furious.

I'm just kidding. That's pretty [frick]ed up.

Whoa. That's pretty messed up. Idk why she chose to talk about it a whole 3 or 4 years later, but regardless, I hope the jerks at casting get the attention they deserve

She could be a cool version of Nubia. I don't think a lot of people know about her and it would be cool to see her. For people who want to know a little bit about her, she was made out of black clay, while Diana was made out of white clay.

Vaughn really missed out on casting her as Storm for First Class,
I'd totally buy her as an African goddess

And no one ever lies about such things. "Civil rights leaders are calling on Daniele Watts to apologize to the Los Angeles Police Department after the black actress claimed she was racially profiled for kissing her white boyfriend in public."

Ohhh STFU!!! Hollywood, as crooked and hypocritical as they are, cast movies 100% based on looks and demeanor. The whole operation is based on stereotypes... She's just looking for some publicity. YAWN

@CherryBomb heck yea. Mybe Fox and Marvel can come to an agreement and it still happens in BP's movie. Not as good as in the actual X-Men. better than nothing though.

I like how neither the article nor the actress explicitly state who told her she was too urban. Yet we see Nolans name in the headline hook as so on. That's some mighty fine internet journalism....I always chuckle when I see those two words next to each other.

and WB/DC were racist bastards when they casted Jesse Eisencolkface as Luthor!

Ah it would be amazing to see Storm in Black Panther - but in that case I would prefer Lupita.
But anyway. If two Quicksilvers can happen with no real fuss about it then maybe Storm is a possibility!

DannRamm113 - 7/16/2015, 7:32 AM
Yeah, because Nolan never had any other ethnic groups than white in his movies...

HA. Too urban for the high class hooker that juno temple was playing perhaps. She didn't look right, that's why she didn't cast her. Too urban was probably their way of saying "if you're playing a hooker, you're not playing a high class one". Sorry
