Black Panther 3 Announced For 2028 Release - David Jonsson Is The MCU's New T'Challa!

Marvel Studios has announced that Black Panther III is officially in the works from Ryan Coogler, and the MCU's new T'Challa will join the filmmaker: Alien: Romulus' David Jonsson.

Marvel Studios closed out its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con (you can find our live blog here) by announcing that Black Panther 3 is officially in the works from Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler.

The movie will be released in theaters on December 15, 2028, and in the post-Avengers: Secret Wars MCU, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk star David Jonsonn will play the adult T'Challa II!

Introduced as the young son of T'Challa and Nakia in the 2022 sequel, fans have long speculated that T'Challa II (a.k.a. Toussaint) would be aged up to take his father's place in the MCU. The character doesn't exist in the comics, so we don't know how much he'll differ from his father, or whether this is a way to essentially recast the role without directly replacing the late Chadwick Boseman.

Jonsson is 32, so he's not exactly playing a teenage or hugely inexperienced T'Challa in Black Panther 3. Boseman was 40 when he played the hero in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, so his son's age suggests big changes are coming to the MCU after Secret Wars.

It was also confirmed that the threequel will be shot on larger format celluloid film, meaning we should be in for a real visual treat when the end of 2028 rolls around.

"I want to say thank you so much, thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin, thank you to this amazing family that I had the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join," the actor said in a brief, yet clearly emotional, message to excited fans.

Jonsonn has been named as a possibility for the role for some time now, though it looked like F1: The Movie star Damson Idris might be the favourite. However, Coogler noted that he cast the new T'Challa after seeing Jonsonn in The Long Walk, so there was likely very little to those Idris claims.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Letitia Wright said, "[Shuri] now has that mantle to pass on, and [that] guidance and the wisdom. I’m going to have a really, really good time, a lot of fun — and I’m going to pick on him so much."

Check out the official Black Panther 3 logo below, along with the moment Jonsonn joined Wright and Winston Duke on stage (his comments on the new T'Challa are also included here). You'll also find our recent interview with Jonsonn for his must-see movie Wasteman.

@GComix85 - He was pretty good in Alien Romulus. I’m just glad Shiri is out. She was awful as BP. Hopefully the film is good

"The MCU's New T'Challa!"

No, he's the MCU's actor for the Son of T'Challa

@Scarilian - he is playing the aged up character from the end of Wakanda Forever. His name is literally T’challa

@MrDandy -
No, don't try to defend the shills. The entire point is that they can label it as T'Challa for engagement bait and people will have hope that it's a recast of T'Challa.

Should have rebooted, could have actually had this actor play T'Challa and have a MCU Spider-man style evolution over the course of a decade of films.

This dude is f**king fantastic and has been on one hell of a hot streak the past few years. Been fantastic in everything he has been in. He’s been my fancast for the role all year and now vindication feels good.

This guy has star power and deserves a big break. He’s going to kill it

@bobevanz - that’s what I’m saying. It was bad idea not to bring back a new t challa OG and not his son who isn’t even in the comics.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 7/26/2026, 2:17 AM
@bobevanz - Apparently BP3 comes out after Secret Wars. Secret Wars is a reset of the franchise, it's heavily rumored that the X-Men reboot will feature younger variations of the characters. Toussaint (T'Challa's son) is known as T'Challa II. He may not be "our" TChalla but he's still a continuation of him carrying the same name.

@BiffDitko - I feel like they might make Denzel star as him
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 7/26/2026, 8:52 AM
@TheRationalNerd - Well, Denzel himself said he was going to be in it. He wasn't in Hall H but he's DENZEL lol so he didn't have to. But yeah, Shadow King would be an interesting role for him. Does that mean he'll wear a Fez? I hope so.

@MrDandy - doesn’t make sense if the son isn’t even in the comics though. Makes more sense to soft reboot with new t challa OG so that way they can adapt his stories in the MCU…

FANTASTIC NEWS.
He was absolutely riveting in
"The Long Walk" he definitely has the chops to follow in Boseman's footsteps.
Also excited to see what Gosling and Levy (!!!!) bring to "Ghost Rider" I'm hoping for a movie that starts off in the 1970s and really leans into that Evel Kineval vibe.
