Black Widow was finally made official at Comic-Con last night and we now know that it will arrive in theaters next May. As well as confirming that David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz are all attached to star, we also learned that the spinoff will be set between the events of
Captain America: Civil War and
Avengers: Infinity War.
Harbour is going to be taking on the role of Red Guardian, a character who sounds like the Russian version of Captain America. Taskmaster, meanwhile, will indeed be the lead villain, while Pugh is set to play Yelena Belova who has a sister-like relationship with Natasha by the sounds of things.
Black Widow is also going to delve into the character's past and Budapest will be a key setting.
"In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person," director Cate Shortland told fans before Scarlett Johansson added:
"I get to play Natahsa as a fully realized woman and in all of her many facets, I’m excited for fans to see the flawed side of her, what she perceives to be the flawed side of her, and I’m looking to wipe out some of that red in my ledger so you guys will be seeing more of that."
As for that footage description, we see Natasha meet with Yelena Belova in a standoff and it's clear that they've both been trained by the same people. It reportedly feels a lot like
Captain America: The Winter Soldier in terms of action and the fight between these two sounds amazing.
Natasha refers to Yelena as "sis" and after a number of action shots like car and motorbike chases, we see Black Widow emerging from the wreckage of a car crash and as she fires at a masked man heading towards her, he holds up a shield and blocks the bullets; it's not clear whether this is Red Guardian or Taskmaster but a battle then begins as the footage winds to a close.
So, sounds pretty good for a movie many deemed "pointless," right? More details should be revealed soon and a trailer landing before the end of the year is pretty much a certainty. Black Widow has only actually been shooting for a month so it's obviously still early days for the movie.
