BLACK WIDOW: Listen To The Haunting Cover Of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" From The BOND-Style Opening Credits

Without getting into spoilers, Black Widow kicks off with a powerful prologue before James Bond-style opening credits that fit this movie perfectly. Set to Malia J's cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the song has now been officially released and can be heard in the player below.

In an interview with Consequence, the singer talked about getting the request from Marvel Studios to use the song. "We honestly thought it was a joke and didn't immediately respond. A different version of this cover has been circulating in the TV/film industry since 2015, and I can only speculate that someone from their camp was a fan and wanted to put it in the movie!"

"I found out during the pandemic, and the news lifted my spirits up during such a dark time," Malia J continued. "I had no idea this song would end up being in a Marvel film, let alone the opening credits. I am such a fan of Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh — to be a part of something they are involved with is a dream come true."

We also have a new poster for Black Widow which you can check out below:

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Black Widow is Bourne meets Bond meets Terminator...with two outstanding, badass female leads. Action-packed, funny, and at times surprisingly gut-wrenching, Cate Shortland's vision for the MCU is bold, empowering, and utterly unmissable."

In the movie, Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige; Black Widow - the first big screen story in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - arrives on July 9th both in theaters and on Disney+.

It's an MCU film - I will see it as many times as possible at the cinema.

Dare I say I don't like Nirvana at all? Nice cover though

@bkmeijer - As long as you accept the importence of the band..

@bkmeijer - Nirvana changed the music industry. In order to do that you have to be too much or too different for a lot of people's tastes. I honestly respect what they did but there are only a couple of songs I actually liked. So I guess what I'm saying is do dare!

@bkmeijer - I'm not a fan of that type of music (I'm more into what is normally called "classic rock"), but a friend of mine who likes them said his favorite album by them (which he loves) is the Unplugged album, which he says really showcases Kurt's vocal skills and voice, and really how good the music was, because it's easier to hear when they aren't blasting and screaming.

So, if I ever decide to give them a chance, I will listen to the Unplugged album.

@ElvenKingSlayer @Manmarvel @LSHF - yeah they pretty much made alternative music into mainstream music by themselves with Nevermind.

Its impressive what they did, but its just not my genre. Maybe Unplugged is different (gonna have to listen to that to judge for myself)

@bkmeijer - haha. To each their own! Nirvana is the reason I’m a touring musician today. Saw them live in San Diego

@SanFranLand - yeah I can imagine the repertoire grew a lot (any of it on spotify by any chance?), so enough to perform I assume

@Itwasme - they helped mainstreamed punk and alternative rock. Dave Grohl used Disco beats as inspiration for the drums making melting genres an acceptable way to do rock. We now have music that spands from rap to country and still considered rock. Many bands list Nirvana as an inspiration for their band/music.

@Manmarvel - they were certainly key in bringing a punk revival back, after it had such a rise in the late 70's and 80's. Growl might have been influenced by some of the funk drummers, but his beats are still on the 2, so its not full funk. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and other grunge acts did a good job of breaking their scene onto the mainstay, a lot of that was Sub Pop's great marketing strategy of calling the Seattle punk Grunge in an attempt to differentiate it from the hard core punk scenes in DC, NYC, and LA. I suppose I asked the question because I was curious of how they changed the industry, but I can see the influence on others. Many bands I know felt like they were the first time they heard their music on the radio.

Wonder how many will be seeing this on D+ premiere vs in the theater. This will be the first MCU movie i will not be able to see Thursday night. My wife is out of town for business so we are going to watch it together states away on D+.

@Manmarvel - I love what you and your wife are going to do. That is awessome.

Regarding what you are wondering about (and I'm going to ramble here, so feel free to skip it and go the next comment), I'm getting the impression is about 50/50. The latest figures show about 47.1% of the adult U.S. population is fully vaccinated. I know some fully vaccinated people who are still leery about crowded theaters, and from what I've read, some here feel the same.

But the premium price tag is keeping people away from watching it at home, despite the fact the the premium is really only the price of 2 or 3 tickets, and we can watch it all we want for a month. PLUS all of the other benefits that go with watching it at home.

Of course, many prefer the environment of watching it with others, and seeing it on a larger screen.

I have one friend who is fully vaccinated, but not comfortable in a crowded theater, BUT still wants to see it on the big screen, SO we are going during the weekdays when it isn't crowded (and we will probably need to wait at least a week).

However, I don't want to accidently see spoilers (I always see these films on Thursday nights before the big opening days), so I am "also" going to pay the premium price and watch it at home as soon as it available (I won't working that day).

Again, very cool what you and your wife are going to do.

@LSHF - respect to everyone’s choices, but what is your friend waiting for if he’s fully vaccinated? No different than being anywhere else for 90 min
LSHF
LSHF - 7/4/2021, 9:05 AM
@whalers - I know what you are saying. Even before I was vaccinated, I told him how they clean the theaters between shows and make sure seating is at least six feet apart, so it was safer than going into a Walmart or other grocery store.

When I asked him what you asked (in so many words), his answer was somewhat like a general concern about the germs (and he was no germaphobe).

No, it wasn't a good answer (lol), but we decided we might as well go when there is hardly anyone in the theater. The main thing is, he "feels" more comfortable, and that will help me relax more and enjoy the film. So, if it works for him, it works for me.

@whalers @LSHF - I understand not wanting to go to the cinema for a blockbuster yet. For me it boils down to being in a room thats probably packed with Black Widow playing and little air condition or air flow. I got no evidence to back it up if it makes a difference, but it feeling comfortable does play a role too.

A movie with where I expect only a few people to show up though, got no issue with that.

Bond style Nirvana song for Black Widow opening? Very interesting course of events, that sentence lol I mean Deadpool had a Bond opening, and they got Celine Dion with an original song.
But hey, maybe this means we can get opening titles back in cbms
