BLACK WIDOW Passes $260 Million Worldwide As F9: THE FAST SAGA Races Towards A Huge $600 Million

Despite no China release date and a noteworthy drop in North America this weekend, Black Widow continues to make an impact globally. However, it's F9: The Fast Saga that's racing past the competition.

Black Widow may have been knocked off the top spot by Space Jam: A New Legacy in North America, but the Marvel Studios movie managed to stay #1 internationally this weekend.

After grossing an additional $29.9 million from 48 markets (a 55% drop from the previous week), the overseas total now stands at $132 million for a global haul of $264 million. Disney hasn't announced any additional streaming figures after touting that big "Premier Access" debut, but chances are many fans have opted to pay that $29.99 to enjoy the movie from the comfort and safety of home.

Black Widow still hasn't secured a release date in China, which is bound to hurt its chances of financial success on a worldwide level over the weeks to come.

That's evident from how well F9: The Fast Saga is doing; after scoring $28.6 million internationally this weekend, it's nearing $600 million globally with $591.2 million. Despite all the negatives of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sequel is on par with where Hobbs & Shaw was at the same point in its release.

The latest Fast & Furious movie still hasn't been given a Digital release, making theaters the only way it can be watched right now. Black Widow, on the other hand, topped the charts on Torrent Freak becoming the most pirated movie of last week (password sharing on Disney+ is also problematic).

Did you guys head to theaters this weekend? If so, what did you decide to watch?

Black Widow will struggle to reach $500 Million.

@marvel72 - Agree, without a china release date and disney+ premiere access there's no way it will make 500 mil. But they no longer need to do that because they keep 85% of ticket sales during the 1st week and apparently keep 90% of USA D+ premiere access purchases. Disney now only needs a high opening 1st week for theaters, then all their profits will come from premiere access and D+ subscribers.

Just like theater going, box office analyzing is going to be dead too because no 1 is required to report their streaming/vod purchases which is more profitable than ticket sales now.

@mastakilla39 - the fact that disney isn't sharing the 2nd week D+ numbers proves they are horrid.

As Wilding notes, "Black Widow, on the other hand, topped the charts on Torrent Freak becoming the most pirated movie of last week (password sharing on Disney+ is also problematic)."

Premiere access is a failure for the big budget films and cinema exclusive remains the benchmark.

@marvel72 -
First Phase 4 movie and chances are it'll make less than most the great Phase 1 movies. Excellent start -_- It's only going to get worse as Shang Chi and Eternals are both being blocked by China so it's up to Spider-man NWH to save the day.

I think Disney realize that nobody is really interested in Shang Chi or Eternals to the same extent as Spider-man NWH, would explain why we have not gotten the Spider-man NWH trailer yet despite such a large outcry and a promise of our first footage preview several months back. They know Spider-man NWH has absorbed all the hype and that it'll overshadow Eternals and Shang Chi easily.

@kitheka - Thank You. Love how the hip new narrative on streaming apparently became construct truth somewhere over the last 6 days despite that pesky little thing called ‘math.’

@mastakilla39 - the number is not 90%. It is 80-85% of PA revenues to the parent company and the remainder to the various TV and Streaming Box manufacturers. Also, as I predicted last week, the overwhelmingly vast majority of D+ subscribers will purchase the PA for $30 in the first 7-10 days of release. After the hype and buzz drops, streaming’s numbers will nosedive worse than the most front-loaded of cinema product.

Disney has thus far refused to release their Week 2 streaming numbers. Must be a power blackout in Burbank 🤷‍♂️.

There are not enough potential NEW subscriptions you know, what is necessary for multiple big budget studio tentpoles to keep pace with the revenue loss inevitable to the one-and-done all access model when repeat theater business dries up.

The math is not there, and it never will be.

@Scarilian - I get the feeling Venom 2 has more hype than Shang-Chi and Eternals. Its gona be crazy if it ends up making more than Shang-Chi and Eternals

@KWilly -
Spider-man: NWH.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing and this is three Spider-men vs the Sinister Six, as long as the movie is structured well and well written then it should perform the best this year. It's worth noting also that people who had no interest in the MCU post-Endgame were still interested in seeing Far From Home because Spider-man is an incredibly popular character.

At the moment all the hype is being directed towards Spider-man:NWH... nobody cares about Eternals or Shang Chi... so Spider-man: NWH will be the first $1bn movie.

It’s a reality that Black Widow’s box office was affected current factors, but I’m still confident that the final numbers will be a respectable figure.

I expect when it's all said and done that Black Widow is gonna be the biggest domestic film and F9 the biggest world wide and both are gonna hold that title until Spider-Man comes out. Hard to see BW getting to $600 million without a huge China release but we'll have to see how it holds week to week. F9 is just a monster of a brand internationally so hard to see where it caps off
LameLuka
LameLuka - 7/19/2021, 4:11 PM
@OmegaDaGrodd - No way BW hits 600 milion with china included 400-450 worldwide is what it probably will end up making

OmegaDaGrodd - 7/19/2021, 4:37 PM
@LameLuka - Eh, idk. Black Widow will likely be at or above 300 million by the weekend so it would not surprise me if it legged it out to 400+ million without China. From there it really depends on how and when it releases in China and how it performs there

A later release in China for BW is leaving tons of money on the table
