BLACK WIDOW's Post-Credits Scene Explained - SPOILERS

Black Widow has only one scene you'll want to sit through the credits for, and this is what you can expect from the sequence, what it means for the MCU's future, and where you'll see [SPOILER] next!

Black Widow is now playing in theaters, so it's time to take a closer look at the film's post-credits scene.

There is only one of them, and it comes right at the very end of the credits, which is somewhat surprising when Marvel Studios usually gives us at least two teasers when the action ends. Regardless, this stinger was shot prior to the pandemic (as confirmed by director Cate Shortland) and ties into a couple of Disney+ TV shows. It also potentially sets up a big part of the MCU's future.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW!

THE POST-CREDITS SCENE

We find Yelena Belova's walking through a graveyard with a dog by her side, and soon learn that she's visiting the grave of Natasha Romanoff following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

It's covered in tributes, and Yelena places a small stuffed bear down before crying. We hear a somewhat obnoxious sniffing noise nearby, as the camera pans over to reveal Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She complains about allergies caused by visiting the Midwest (where Natasha and Yelena spent their childhood), but the Widow doesn't seem interested in taking any more jobs from her.

However, when Val reveals that her next target is Hawkeye, Yelena seems far more intrigued especially after the mysterious character says Clint Barton was the one responsible for Natasha's death.

WHAT IT MEANS

It's unclear what Val is up to, but she's so far created her own "Captain America" in U.S. Agent and seems to have a Black Widow on the payroll too. We don't know why she's targeting Barton, but it could have something to do with the time he spent as Ronin, as that's who we see on her tablet.

As for Yelena, regardless of whether she was Blipped, it seems she has experience working with Val and may have continued being an assassin even after escaping the Red Room.

WHERE WILL WE SEE YELENA BELOVA NEXT?

It's previously been reported that Florence Pugh will reprise the role of Yelena in Disney+'s Hawkeye, so that's clearly where her story will continue. Setting her sights on Clint Barton could go a couple of different ways; she may learn the truth about Natasha's death and become a hero or head down a villainous route, taking "Ronin" down (leaving Kate Bishop to take up the mantle).

As for Val, it feels a lot like we could see her at pretty much any time in the MCU from here!

I wonder if Marvel is going for a Dark Avengers storyline over a Thunderbolts storyline. If you look at the team so far you have US Agent (Captain America), Yelena (Black Widow), we will now have Abomination back (Hulk), and that would leave Hawkeye and Thor to be threats in Val's eye. I wonder if we will get a Dark Avengers verse Young Avengers movie.

@SonOfAGif - Dark Avengers makes sense.

Yea the Accords sort of loosely still exist. But you have the new Cap illustrating an autonomy of sorts with his actions at the end of TFAWS. You’ve got a ROGUE WITCH in Wanda taking over a town and then running off.

The govts of the world, those in power, shadow cabals whatever you wanna call them would want a team of powered, highly skilled morally ambiguous individuals they can control and have a hand in running; via Val.

@SonOfAGif - It makes sense. I hope they don’t call them the Dark Avengers tho. It sounds so hokey.

@SonOfAGif - I imagine it will be a combination of the two. Something like the team name in-universe being The Thunderbolts, but story-wise they are basically MCU's Dark Avengers.

@FinnishDude - I have a feeling it's going to be a Young Avengers vs. Thunderbolts movie. With the New Avengers taking over as the next Avengers team.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 7/9/2021, 12:37 AM
@SonOfAGif - Yeah, that makes sense for the next big event movie. Have all the old guard defeated/disposed of, so the next generation has to step up and save the day.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 7/9/2021, 1:12 AM
@FinnishDude - Exactly. I don't see the Young Avengers being a permanent team. Just a one off movie where it establishes the next set of full time Avengers. I see the Young Avengers consisting of Kid Loki, Kate Bishop, Iron Heart, America Chavez, Spider-Man, Wiccan and Speed. And after they defeat the Thunderbolts, The New Avengers will be Sam Wilson, Scarlet Witch, White Vision, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Lady Thor

Hawkeye would [frick] her up, good luck kid

So Hawkeye is gonna set another Black Widow on the hero's path? Thats where I expect this to end though.

And from what I can tell, I think having's Val's first appearance be in FATWS instead actually makes this feel more like a natural next appearance.

@bkmeijer - I would agree but not all of the movie going audience watches the Disney+ shows like the die hard fans do

@PantherKing - thats true. And whatever's watched first (or only), I think her appearance is confusing to most anyway.

This feels like it’s definitely light on post-credit scenes (I can’t remember any having only one, aside from Endgame having none), but this could definitely go in interesting places.
JDL
JDL - 7/8/2021, 10:15 PM
@WeaponXCII - All they could have shown would have been links to Eternals or Shang-Chi and neither of those works.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 7/9/2021, 12:23 AM
@WeaponXCII - Most Phase 1 movies only had one and so did Age of Ultron.

@FinnishDude - You're right- I had forgotten how humble the MCU's beginnings were.
WeaponXCII
WeaponXCII - 7/12/2021, 3:24 PM
@JDL - True. Although to be fair, there have been post-credits scenes that haven't strictly related to the film, for example the one with Mjolnir at the end of Iron Man 2. I'm sure Marvel could have made something work if they were set on it.
JDL
JDL - 7/12/2021, 6:35 PM
@WeaponXCII - That Hammer scene seemed pretty well ties to Thor 1 imo. YMMV.
WeaponXCII
WeaponXCII - 7/12/2021, 6:57 PM
@JDL - Right, but it didn’t really tie into the plot of Iron Man 2, so there was a precedent set if they had decided that they wanted to go that route. I don’t want to Monday morning quarterback it, though; what’s done is done, and I’m honestly decently satisfied with what we got.
JDL
JDL - 7/12/2021, 7:05 PM
@WeaponXCII - OK IC what you're getting at. TBH I never thought of these things as being anything other than provocative and that can go lots of different ways.

Dark Avengers, or some variation of it, is coming; hopefully.
Cap1

So she’ll be hunting him down in Hawkeye and later become an ally. That’s cool! Wonder if she got blipped
dracula
dracula - 7/8/2021, 4:27 PM
Have a feeling she is putting together her own Avengers, her being the Nick Fury, Walker being the Captain America, Yelena obviously being the new black widow.

Guessing either Abomination or Red Hulk will replace Hulk. Not sure who could fill in for Thor, maybe one of the Eternals like Black Knight. There really isnt anyone to replace Iron Man, doubt Rhodey would join and doubt she would recruit a teenager. Dont know if the new hawkeye would fit the team
cocaegelo
cocaegelo - 7/8/2021, 5:29 PM
@dracula - Maybe the "her hawkeye" is Taskmaster. I hope "Her Iron-Man" is Justin Hamme as Titanium Man, but I really don't have a guess about someone with a Thor-level power and morally ambiguous to be on her team hahah (Maybe Ikaris if he's really the bad guy from Eternals?)
cocaegelo
cocaegelo - 7/8/2021, 5:31 PM
@dracula - Or maybe Titania, she will be on She Hulk.
