BLUE BEETLE Braces Itself For A Bad Weekend After Landing Same CinemaScore As BLACK ADAM

Despite some early positive buzz, Blue Beetle looks set to have a disappointing opening weekend after landing an unwanted CinemaScore. The movie's Rotten Tomatoes score is also starting to decrease...

After making a mere $3.3 million during Thursday previews, Deadline reports that Blue Beetle is now gearing up for a $25 million opening weekend.

That's higher than very early tracking (which placed it under $20 million) but lower than recent predictions of $30+ million. Even $25 million may prove to be something of an overestimate as the number largely hinges on whether Latino and Hispanic audiences will help Blue Beetle exceed expectations.

While the movie opening at the #1 spot seems all but guaranteed, the DC Comics adaptation will have Barbie nipping at its heels. That's estimated to make upwards of $21 million during its fifth weekend in theaters.

Blue Beetle was originally produced for the Max streaming service before pivoting to a theatrical release. It's thought to have cost only $104 million to produce, but that doesn't factor in marketing costs.

With that in mind, the movie will likely need to make at least $250 million - $300 million worldwide to break even.

Not helping matters on that front is Blue Beetle's CinemaScore. Those are generated by polling moviegoers as they leave the theater and the DCEU title doesn't appear to be blowing people away.

With a B+, it's on par with movies like Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. With the expectation of the first two, those were all box office disappointments. On the plus side, this is better than The Flash's B score.

Blue Beetle is also perilously close to losing "Certified Fresh" status on Rotten Tomatoes; it needs 75% to maintain that score but has recently dipped to 77%.

In Blue Beetle, recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle is now playing in theaters.

It just looks uninteresting. I hope James Gunn and DC are taking notes. I think the general audience are done with DC as a brand.

The problem with this, based on the trailer, is that it looks exactly like every other super hero movie that’s came out in the last 10+ years.

It’s getting boring.

@Superhavs - looks the same except cheaper though.

No big name actors, mediocre action and CGI.

@Usernametaken - the CGI looks horrible! When it showed his point of view in the suit I thought it looked like something from the ‘90s

So is it good or bad Josh? I need you to make up your mind and tell me how to feel.

@Himura - this gave me a good laugh. The guy is easily swayed, and thinks that his opinions really matter 😂

Not shocked. YouTube critics were being way too soft on the film. You can tell they were kinda pulling their punches by saying:

*the family stuff was great!*😑

*Has heart*😐

*Everything was ehh except the family. Buy a ticket*😐.......

People are done with DC. It's clear as day. If it ain't Batman or Batman related you're done😬

@AmazingFILMporg - And even Batman related stuff is struggling.

The Batman made less than Man of Steel did a decade earlier and that was considered a disappointment. And that's a Superman movie we're talking about. The Batman should have made a billion plus. And The Flash flopped. Batman: No Way Home flopped. Just think about that a second. Michael Keaton Batman.

I asked James Gunn on Threads if we are getting Plastic Man. He gave me the IDK emoji.

@Mother[frick]erJon - Maybe try leaving James Gunn alone??? Just a thought

They need to just rinse Aquaman 2, get this all over with and stop being vague.

I feel like unless the new Superman is freaking awesome and word of mouth is great, it's gonna sttrugle to make money. The DCEU tarnished this brand to a point that it will be hard to repair.

@Urubrodi - honestly, it may have been better to shelve a DC universe for a bit and concentrate on unique elsewhere movies that help break the stagnant mold of current superhero films. Then come back to it after gaining some good will or at least letting people forget the mess they made.

@MrDandy - Couldn’t agree more, even Marvel would benefit from some standalone stories atm. It should have been one of the most obvious things to do when you have a multiverse.

And this is what I've been saying. When you focus on race so heavily you basically are just relying on that one demographic you either need to be realistic about the budget or focus on some element to intrigue other markets.

Being a superhero film it's male centric and the Hispanic population is 20%. So reasonably speaking best case scenario is about $300 mil for the domestic box office. And while that sounds interesting, it's also dependent on how many male Latinos would be willing to see the movie due to representation. Then applying this globally, other countries aren't gonna care for another superhero but this time he's not American. Only other part of the world that would care for the representation is central and south America, which isn't particularly strong on the global box office.

What needs to focus on is universal appeal and quality. Just look at puss in boots 2 for an example. That movie has a Hispanic lead with a thick Spanish accent. Representation is definitely there. But the focus is on his journey to dealing with old age and the fear of death. Something literally everyone can relate to on some level. That and it has great quality animation and well written.

@Origame - blah blah blah won't someone make a movie about only white people and their problems for once 🥴
Origame
Origame - 8/19/2023, 9:59 AM
@bobevanz - well get this, they've never made a movie where they're like "it's the same film as all these other ones, but this time they're all white".

And if they made that movie I'd be just as critical if not more so than here.

So why should thr inverse be a thing.

Unless you're saying the problems of characters like Peter Parker are exclusive to white people. To which I respond:

@Origame - Be serious.
Origame
Origame - 8/19/2023, 11:05 AM
@WakandanQueen - ...I am. Race of the actors is quality neutral. Yet that's basically the selling point of that movie.

Hell the numbers I gave are best case scenario implying all Latinos will want to see a movie simply because it features Latinos.
