Though Blue Beetle is a relatively light-hearted adventure, for the most part, it does contain its share of dramatic scenes, and the movie's most emotional moment involves the surprising death of a principal character.

If you haven't seen Blue Beetle yet, major spoilers follow.

When Victoria Lord (Susan Sarandon) tracks down the Scarab and sends her forces to retrieve it from the Reyes household, Jaime's father Alberto (Damián Alcázar) suffers a fatal heart attack.

While speaking to Collider, director Ángel Manuel Soto revealed that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but the studio was adamant that the movie include "an emotional death" in order to make things personal for Jaime.

“’How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member? And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low actually ends up being a power for him? At the end of the day, what is that push that this reluctant hero needs at the end of the day for him to embrace his destiny?’ When we started to understand that, we were like, ‘This could be maybe a good opportunity to explore magic realism in this sequence where Jaime is about to die.’”

Killing off Jaime's dad also provided Soto with an opportunity to explore Latin American culture as it relates to death and spirituality, as father and son share a moment in their version of the afterlife.

Have you been to see Blue Beetle? If so, what did you make of the big death scene? Drop us a comment down below.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is now in theaters.

To the clown who has me blocked, while Marvel does get the Imax screens, it's FORMATTED for imax, not shot in imax. This is what we call LIEmax, also that movie will flop like a fish

Wait, they were trying to make that a unique death? Wtf? His father was through and through an uncle Ben character.

Marvel and DC should not kill off comic book characters. What they should do to create stakes in films is to create a character that last a few episodes/films and then kill them. That way a Black Widow, Odin, or Iron Man more easily could return instead of creating a contrived reason to as to how they return.

@Forthas - that's one of the reasons No Way Home redeems some of my previous gripes with MCU Spidey.

Gotta say May's demise did hit harder then the previous Uncle Bens.

@Fogs - Really? Killing her kind of upset me. I thought it was a bad idea.
Fogs
Fogs - 8/24/2023, 6:39 PM
@Forthas - After seeing her relationship with Peter since HC... Yeah to me it was really meaningful. Would be totally understandable of Peter killed off Osborn. Brought up the stakes and gave him a proper hero and redeeming arc.

Also did begin the set up for his now lonely life.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/24/2023, 6:42 PM
@Fogs - Why not just put her at the brink of death? That would be enough to justify him wanting to kill Goblin. I liked Aunt May being a guiding force for him...like his version of Alfred. They will miss that in his future films. who will provide that voice of reason or morality that everyone needs in their life?
Fogs

@Forthas - Having her forgetting about him by the end would be even more heartbreaking than her death... imo.

@Fogs - The relationship was only really present in Homecoming in parts and it only actually did much in No Way Home. Otherwise she's hot hip aunt. I think NWH had to do far more extra legwork to make Peter's relationship with May and Michelle have personal weight, because they basically did very little in the last 2 movies.

@dagenspear - I didn't feel this new Aunt May and I cant event feel it because she's too hot.
Fogs
Fogs - 8/25/2023, 4:00 AM
@dagenspear - I disagree. The part she helps him with the girl in HC is very sweet. In FFH she's always worried about his trip and is a very zealous aunt.

But hey, in the end it's all down to opinions. But since I rewatched both not so long ago I have her role and Michelle pretty fresh in my mind.

Am I saying it's better than classic Ben, old May and redhead MJ? No. But to me they managed to make it work the wat it was.

It is looking like Blue Beetle is projected to have a steep drop this coming weekend. The total domestic gross at the end of its run may not reach $75 million. How can something like this happen in this day and age?
Fogs
Fogs - 8/24/2023, 6:33 PM
@Forthas - it looks generic af.

A true flavor of the week type of film, tbh.
Forthas

@Fogs -

There are a ton of generic looking films that did way better....at least cracking 200 million worldwide. But we have now enetered niche horror film levels of box office performance for a major motion picture.
ThorArms
ThorArms - 8/24/2023, 6:41 PM
@Forthas - It might not have as bad of a drop because of the $4 tickets this Sunday

I just checked with every single Hispanic person in the United States, and yes, every single one of them rolled their eyes & was insulted by this statement.

You really have to hand it to DC for being so original! The concept is so simple but still complex so that no other comic book company is ever thought of this before! The sheer genius of killing off the father figure to motivate the young hero. Bravo DC bravo, I think I'll go see the movie now… No not really!

There's no such things as other cultures version of the afterlife. There's only one and that's decided by YHWH the One True Jehovah God.

God worked through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit to save our souls. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will be saved. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him.

Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible.

That death really hurt though, so mission accomplished.

I really liked Alberto as a character. He was so optimistic and never lost hope or his smile, even though he'd been through so much.

The father was a likable actor, but he was given nothing to work with. It felt like they were trying to do a mix of Uncle Ben and Jonathon Kent - where the death is partially the result of the actions of our main character but at the same time supposed to be beyond their ability to save.

Personally I think it'd have made more sense to kill the Sister. The father has poor health anyway, but its the sister who (despite teasing him) is supportive of the main character and the family getting a job alongside the main character. The sister's death would also have been shocking and had more of an emotional weight to it because then you can create a rift in the family. The death of the father was expected, the death of another character would have surprised.
