The DC FanDome reveals continue with a first look at Blue Beetle!
Director Angel Manuel Soto, writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and star Xolo Maridueña shared some concept art of the costume Jaime Reyes will don in the upcoming HBO Max movie, and we're sure fans of the hero will agree that it looks pretty damn cool.
“For once, we are able to see a hero that comes from a family from a similar economic background from the ones that we came from and represents the majority of people who are coming from the bottom,” said Soto. “I know for a fact that any of the other superheroes who think they have the best superhero suit, I’m calling you out for a rap battle,” added Maridueña. “We have the best suit over here at Blue Beetle.“
The DCEU has featured a few prominent Latino characters in the past, but this marks the first time a standalone movie will spotlight a Latino lead.
Reyes was introduced back in 2006's Infinite Crisis, and is the third character to take up the mantle of Blue Beetle after after Dan Garret and Ted Kord - although he's arguably eclipsed both in popularity since. Though there may be some purists that would have preferred to see Kord introduced first, this is a smart move by WB. The new teenage take on Spider-Man has been a huge success for Marvel, after all, and the DC Films Universe doesn't currently have a character that will appeal more to a slightly younger demographic on its roster.
