Blue Beetle was originally going to be one of the lower-budgeted DC movies developed exclusively for HBO Max, joining Batgirl and planned features for characters like Black Canary and Zatanna. Warner Bros. being acquired by Discovery changed everything, though, and it's now going to receive a theatrical release.
Whether Jaime will be among the characters who make the leap into the new DCU is hard to say, though DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did Tweet out the first poster on his social media channels.
Xolo Mariduena and Susan Sarandon lead the Blue Beetle cast, and we now have a synopsis. Shared by Warner Bros. in its 2023 slate preview, there's a lot here for comic book fans to be excited about. Alas, there's no mention of the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord!
"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," it begins.
"As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers," the description concludes, "forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
We're excited about this one, and hope the first trailer will at least be released in time for Shazam! Fury of the Gods' arrival in theaters next March (if not sooner). Set photos showcasing Blue Beetle's costume have been well-received by fans but it's bound to look even better on screen.
Joining Maridueña, Sarandon, and Guillén in the movie are Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
