Blue Beetle opened in theaters last Friday, and didn't exactly make a major impact at the box office. After a week of release, Warner Bros.' latest DC Comics movie has only just passed $60 million worldwide.
Despite overall positive reviews (its Rotten Tomatoes score has increased to 78%), general audiences just don't seem very interested in Jaime Reyes' first big-screen outing.
Whether this is down to the character being relatively obscure, "superhero fatigue," or the perception that the DC brand has been severely damaged by a string of lacklustre films is up for debate, but Blue Beetle has proved fairly popular with the CBM community.
The results of our recent poll are in, and with a total of 767 votes, 31% of you felt the movie was "very good." The most positive option, "excellent," was next with 21% of the votes, followed by "good" at 20%, "watchable" at 16% and "awful" at 12%.
There's a chance word-of-mouth could turn things around for Blue Beetle as it heads into its second week in theaters, but even with a modest budget of $120 million, all signs point to another flop for the studio. Reyes is expected to stick around in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU, but a direct sequel is highly unlikely.
"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is now in theaters.
