BLUE BEETLE Poll And Spoiler Discussion - How Would You Rate WB's Latest DC Movie?

Blue Beetle arrived in theaters on Friday, and despite a (mostly) positive reception from critics, Warner Bros.' latest DC Comics movie had a disappointing debut. What did you think? Let us know here.

Blue Beetle hit theaters on Friday, and after a disappointing opening weekend (the movie took in just over $40 million worldwide), Jaime Reyes' big-screen debut is looking like the latest in a series of bombs for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Though the film was positively reviewed (76% on Rotten Tomatoes), a B+ CinemaScore would seem to indicate that general audiences weren't overly impressed. Strong word-of-mouth could have given the movie legs, but, unfortunately, a significant second weekend drop is the more likely outcome.

Is "superhero fatigue" to blame? Or has the DC brand simply been damaged beyond repair? Could it be down to Reyes being a relatively obscure character? The latter seems like a stretch since The Flash is one of DC's most recognizable heroes, and we know how his recent solo outing fared at the box office.

If you've been to see Blue Beetle, take our poll below and be sure to give us your take on the movie - with spoilers - in the comments section.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

I think superhero fatigue is real. Marvel should continue to be profitable because people are invested in the movies. DCU could potentially meet that if they build quality content and a knitted universe that folks want as an alternative to the MCU. If the quality or writing dips in either case, people are going to go elsewhere or not go to the movies at all.

@WhatIfRickJames -

Yup. It started with a few really good movies. The Bale Batman movies and the majority of the Infinity Saga were all good. Once a market was identified every studio started cranking out product and most of it sucked, although people went to see the anyway. Then we hit both oversaturation as well as stretching the available creative very thin. Marvel ultimately killed the golden goose by giving anyone with an idea a $300 million budget for a bunch of stuff that nobody wanted to see to begin with and they were poorly written and poorly executed.

I think we will see significant contraction where studios won't want to flush good money after bad but who knows. Smarter people than me make bad decisions all the time.

@WhatIfRickJames @Goldboink - Superhero fatigue is fake, Blockbuster fatigue is real. Other big movies besides superhero are failing too like Indiana Jones 5, Haunted Mansion, Lil Mermaid, Elemental, and Mission Impossible 7. All these films look the same to consumers now. Giant CGI fests are no longer considered cinematic events or interesting to the majority.

Only unique and trusted franchises have been doing well like GOTG vol 3, Super Mario, Across the Spider-verse, Barbie, and Oppenheimer.

Barbie was completely different but it was well executed. Too many blockbusters are poorly executed films.

@Goldboink - Barbie was all over place yeah sexism is obvious in movie but people going to Barbie world and vise versa that made movie little dumb plus stupid beer parts in Barbie world and everything happens in Barbie world effects real world felt like enchanted with Barbie

There are parts of Blue Beetle I enjoyed. But the movie gets quite goofy at parts to cater towards the “family” aspect of the film. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more had it been focused on Jaimie and Jenny. Felt like a Spanish soap opera at times. I did enjoy the moments when he suited up as Blue Beetle.

@slickrickdesigns - agreed. The goofy humour content needs to go if these comic book movies are going to survive. Yes you can throw a few laughs in but the have to be sharp witted comments, not childish humour.

@slickrickdesigns - Aye, that's exactly what I said! I leaned over to my SO and said, "this feels like a bad soap opera"

We cracked up at a couple of the tio's lines, but overall it felt extremely. Like if you told me the movie was written by an AI, I'd believe it.

@BB8ANG - Also, the first suit up scene was so amazingly dark, like 10/10 body horror. My girlfriend even cried a little at the horror of it. I really wish the movie kept more of that tone.

I loved the costume and the family dynamics. The movie had the all too familiar superhero tropes but the cast , especially the Reyes family were very endearing and made it worthwhile. I'd say the locations and the synthwave soundtrack kinda made the movie feel dated but in a good way. Like a mix of Saved by the bell and the early 2000s superhero movies.

The Reyes family were just stereotypes with no real development beyond that. I've seen more development for family superhero movies elsewhere. Incredibles is nearly 20 years old. I expected more from the family dynamic that surface level stereotypes.

• I know nothing about the mother.
• The main character has nothing beyond graduating college and liking a girl
• The father I don't even have a full grasp of where he worked, what he did, etc... all I know is that he suffers from heart troubles and drinks.
• The sister, similarly, I don't know anything about, she just exists to tease/support the main character.
• The Nan's a revolutionary for a joke but that's it.
• Paranoid/conspiracy guy revealed they were all illegal immigrants but that's the extent of his character.

The characters are endearing only because they are relatively harmless/jokey, we don't really explore them.

@Scarilian - I just said it was good. All those points you made could be made for any recent superhero movie. Comparing it to Incredibles doesn't make any sense cause that movie is about the family as a whole. This one is just supposed to have Jaime as the focus and to a certain extent I think they got that right.

@Scarilian - You don't know where the father works? There is a whole scene about it and they use their business staff shirt for the whole movie. Not saying the movie is great but they really spent a lot of time on the family financial crisis part.

It's mentioned he worked at a 'shop' during the opening dinner scene, but the shop is closed prior to the movie starting because of his heart attack.

As for 'business staff shirt', unsure what you are talking about, perhaps you have the character confused? I've skimmed through the movie on an online version (admittedly poor quality) and the dad just wears generic plain top, checkered shirts and in one scene a jacket. None of which have any corporate stuff? The only one that might be it is that the jacket in the dinner scene at the start has red text on it?

Either way, I know nothing about that character beyond him suffering from heart attacks. At one point it seemed like we'd delve into his character more, but instead he just talks about generic things such as seeing his son grow up.

"they really spent a lot of time on the family financial crisis part."

It's a single scene really, the dinner is basically explaining they are broke, losing the house and that's what motivates the main character to get a job. They have a running joke about main character being rescued from poverty by the rich corporation lady, but that's about it.

My point is that superhero movies have been doing better family dynamics than this film for a long time. People should stop accepting garbage and decreasing quality. The idea of having a family dynamic is not new, handled well or a good method of marketing this film.

Its watchable, ONCE - but it does not really nail any aspect and there's nothing new here. It's mediocre I guess. Best scene is him gaining the suit for the first time and you've seen a majority of that transformation if you've seen a trailer.

It lacks characterization beyond stereotypes, it feels like it needed another draft or two and it just kinda feels like a knock-off of the superhero movies you've watched in the last 15 years.

It was a cute, charming movie that reminded me of the MCU phase 1. A solid foundation that can become something great under Gunns leadership.

Solid 7/10 and place 3 on my CBM list 2023 behind Spidey and Guardians.

It was pretty good. 3/5 stars.

It seemed very been there done that generic and will be mostly forgotten pretty soon. It was a lot better than those lousy Shazam/Black Adam movies.
