X-Men: These Two Fan-Favorite Mutants Will Reportedly Be Missing From The Reboot

Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is quickly taking shape, and a new rumour claims to reveal two fan-favourite mutants who will be missing from the movie when it arrives in theaters in 2028.

Marvel Studios' untitled X-Men reboot has started assembling its cast, but the team definitely feels incomplete. Beast is still expected to join Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, and Storm, but will that be it?

When the X-Men debuted, it was with a five-person team. Rogue and Storm weren't part of the lineup; instead, we had Angel and Iceman. With that in mind, perhaps we should expect only one more addition to the ensemble before cameras start rolling.

The X-Men will be led by Professor X, while Mister Sinister and Emma Frost are expected to be the primary antagonists (there is, however, a chance the latter is allied with the mutant heroes). As for Magneto, we've heard conflicting reports about whether the Master of Magnetism will be included in this fresh start for the franchise.

Plus, with Rogue in the mix, many fans hope that Gambit won't be too far behind. Well, while it could happen down the line, it doesn't sound like it's in the works quite yet.

According to Knight Edge Media's Caleb Williams, neither Magneto nor Gambit will appear in Marvel Studios' X-Men. This will disappoint some fans, but it's not hugely surprising.

Magneto was the big bad in nearly every 20th Century Fox X-Men movie, while Gambit has recently been front and centre in Deadpool & Wolverine and this December's Avengers: Doomsday. Letting both characters rest for a while could be what's best for them.

While he wasn't mentioned by Williams, Wolverine is also expected to be absent from the reboot.

"One of the great things about the comics is [that] there is such a rich and broad history," Schreier recently said. "That was one of the first things that Kevin and I talked about when I came in; they made many great movies in this world, and they've made so many great things. Let's find the things that haven't recently been done well. All these other corners of the universe."

The filmmaker continued, "Digging back into those comics like 20 years, the whole Chris Claremont run, the newer Jonathan Hickman stuff. There are so many stories that are still untold, to honor and to reach into, and then to meet this cast and try to do something new, I think you always want to see something that reveres where it came from and then is still taking a new spin on where we want to go."

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, and Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm.

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

I think a break from Magneto is good, but I do wish they were introducing a new Gambit

I like Caleb, seems like a cool guy..... but he is not a scooper and never has acted like such.

Honestly, that's fine. We had Magneto for like almost all of the Fox movies; it's time for a new big bad with Sinister. I would imagine they'll set up Magneto at some point, but it would be wise to let almost the whole first trilogy be villains we haven't seen. Maybe set up Apocalypse for the 2nd trilogy?

Gambit will come in the sequel or third movie, I would imagine, if he's indeed not in the first. No shot they totally leave him out.

@JabbaTheSus - Magneto was literally in ALL the xmen movies.

talk about overkill. Fox was never able to move past him.

Sinister over Magneto, personally. We've seen enough Magneto for now.

When they do decide to introduce him, they should definitely take note of how X-men evolution explained him from WW2 but not looking like my nuts after a soak in the tub.

@ArthurFuchsache - I hope whenever Magneto does appear that they keep his WW 2 origins…

Maybe he could just have slow aging in her entry now or like Evolution , use a device to prolong his life as you said.

@TheVisionary25 - it makes sense to do it, seeing as super soldier serum is sort of everywhere in the MCU now . My burning question is who plays him, because I wouldn't know where to begin with fan-casting him

I'm cool with Magneto not appearing. Would be wise to treat him like a villain that will bring severe consequences to the team by the end of the movie in a sequel.

Mr. Sinister is an interesting choice for a first movie too. Kinda feels a little early but with the FoxMen movies kinda stepping on every X-Men story, I can kinda see the thinking...

Rumor is magneto would have a more modern backstory.. not having to do with the holocaust (which was 100 years ago in MCU timeline)

Despite the logic in that decision, some people/purists will not be happy. It would derail the entire 1st movie as people will focus on that "transgression". So in a sense it's smart to leave magneto out if the 1dt film and let the actors, movie makers, and plot establish the new tone of mutants and xmen in the mcu

Then introduce thw new magneto, gay iceman, Krakoa storylines, themes of racism/bigotry new actor for wolverine, all the things some people may find divisive... in subsequent movies. Go more safe with the 1st movie for all the snowflakes out there

@Vigor - I don’t like that decision if that’s the route they go with Magneto but yeah…

Probably best to establish this version before getting into potentially controversial stuff (which tbh is pretty much everything nowadays).

So a female heavy team? Fantastic.
Rpendo
Rpendo - 9/4/2026, 10:08 AM
@PatientXero - are you scared of women, little guy?

The X-Men have the deepest, best roster of female characters in all of comics, villains and heroes. If the core cast is 7 characters, and four are women and three are men, would that be okay with you, or are you so insecure that you simply must have the men outnumbering the women to placate your little fee-fees?

It's the first movie. There will be like 8 X-Men films and various cross overs and solo films within the next few years.
UnderBelly

When Magneto finally joins the MCU, I hope his backstory hits just as hard as it did in the original X-Men movies. Grounding him in the Holocaust was incredible storytelling. Update-wise, drawing parallels to modern conflicts—like the decades of tension between Israel and Palestine—would be bold, though it’s probably a bit too politically risky for Marvel. Still, it makes you wonder how they'll update his timeline without sacrificing the gravitas of his character or doing something woke, especially when it's in the world of mutants where they really don't need to push any agendas that haven't already been explored in the comics.

@UnderBelly - They could always make Magneto Black and use the Civil Rights struggle as a part of his origin.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 9/4/2026, 10:15 AM
Honestly , I’m fine with both Magneto & Gambit not being in the first film…

Magneto has been in pretty much every X-Men film so it’s ok if he rests for a bit not and it makes sense to establish this version of Rogue before bringing in Gambit aswell.

Whenever we do get them , my picks for Magneto would be Lee Pace (thanks @H1african) or Matt Smith and Gambit should maybe be an unknown actor tbh.

I'd love to see a live action Morph or Fantomex(coolest costume ever!) or even someone like Multiple Man. Let's see some of the weird Mutants too, the new "X-Men '97" did a great job showing all thise odball characters in the background. Kinda like the Mos Eisley Cantina. Go crazy with practical makeup effects. Leech would be cool. Even though he was kind of in "X2".
