Blue Beetle was originally going to be one of the lower-budgeted DC movies developed exclusively for HBO Max, joining Batgirl and planned features for characters like Black Canary and Zatanna. Warner Bros. being acquired by Discovery changed everything, though, and it's now going to receive a theatrical release.
Whether Jaime will be among the characters who make the leap into the new DCU is hard to say, though DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did Tweet out the first poster on his social media channels.
If Blue Beetle is a hit, then there's a chance it will be the first DCU movie. As things stand, it's just another DCEU title heading our way in 2023 that may or may not be important to where things go next, a shame considering the fact it features a diverse lead and a hero whose live-action debut is long overdue.
We'll see what the future holds in store, but some newly released promo art showcases Jamie Reyes suited up as Blue Beetle. That costume looks phenomenal, and the sooner we get to see it in action, the better. Unfortunately, we don't anticipate a trailer being attached to Shazam! Fury of the Gods later this week.
In the movie, recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers," the description concludes, "forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Joining Maridueña, Sarandon, and Guillén in the movie are Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
