Blue Beetle was originally going to be one of the lower-budgeted DC movies developed exclusively for HBO Max, joining Batgirl and planned features for characters like Black Canary and Zatanna. Warner Bros. being acquired by Discovery changed everything, though, and it's now set to receive a theatrical release this summer.
Whether Jaime Reyes will be among the characters who make the leap into the new DCU is hard to say, but assuming it's a hit and doesn't feature any blatant nods to the DCEU, there's always a chance!
In the meantime, some new promo art from the movie has found its way online showcasing Blue Beetle's striking costume. That didn't look great in set photos, but once it's enhanced with VFX, we're sure the suit will look suitably cinematic. Luckily, it shouldn't be too long before we see it in action.
Earlier this week, Blue Beetle star George Lopez shared a photo on Instagram with fellow cast members Xolo Maridueña, Harvey Guillén, and director Ángel Manuel Soto, promising followers that the teaser trailer is "coming soon."
In the movie, recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers," the description concludes, "forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Joining Maridueña, Sarandon, and Guillén in the movie are Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
