As part of an extensive summer preview, Entertainment Weekly has debuted a pair of new stills from Blue Beetle, giving us a first glimpse of the character played by What We Do in the Shadows alum Harvey Guillén.
The trade has also revealed that Guillén will play Doctor Sanchez, who works for Susan Sarandon's villainous Victoria Kord. While Kord will do whatever it takes to get her hands on the Scarab in Jaime Reyes' (Xolo Mariduena) possession, it sounds like Sanchez will be a little more conflicted.
"The character was complex," Guillén explains. "You're loyal to the profession and the job that you have, and you're loyal to being a good person, and you have to make a choice. Sometimes we don't make the choices. We're human. And when given a choice, we might make the wrong one."

Originally developed for the HBO Max streaming service, fans grew concerned that Blue Beetle may suffer the same fate as the recently cancelled Batgirl, but the movie was given a theatrical release date shortly after Warner Bros. was acquired by Discovery.
"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
