As part of an extensive summer preview, Entertainment Weekly has debuted a pair of new stills from Blue Beetle, giving us a first glimpse of the character played by What We Do in the Shadows alum Harvey Guillén.

The trade has also revealed that Guillén will play Doctor Sanchez, who works for Susan Sarandon's villainous Victoria Kord. While Kord will do whatever it takes to get her hands on the Scarab in Jaime Reyes' (Xolo Mariduena) possession, it sounds like Sanchez will be a little more conflicted.

"The character was complex," Guillén explains. "You're loyal to the profession and the job that you have, and you're loyal to being a good person, and you have to make a choice. Sometimes we don't make the choices. We're human. And when given a choice, we might make the wrong one."

Check out the new images at the link below, and have another look at the recently released trailer.

Originally developed for the HBO Max streaming service, fans grew concerned that Blue Beetle may suffer the same fate as the recently cancelled Batgirl, but the movie was given a theatrical release date shortly after Warner Bros. was acquired by Discovery.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

He’s looking pretty gruff and serious in that still. Kind of a big departure from playing Gizmo in WWDITS and Perrito in Puss in Boots.

Will the Blue Beetle and the Flash open less at the box office than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? I think both will open with less. Looks like Superhero movie fatigue is real.

@AllsGood - marvels fatigue is specifically because of mediocre content. Even the good content can’t reverse that, seemingly. Of course, guardians may have long legs. It’s not a bad opening by any means, but not what it couldve been either. Sounds like a great movie, ain’t had time to see it yet, but the damage is done. I won’t say Mark will can’t recover it to its greatness, but I will say that it may be ignored. I mean for all I know Guardians 3 is One of their best. But I’m not seeing the hype that you used to see among normal people. Normal people went bonkers for marvel. Spider-Man is Spider-Man but the billion dollar days seem to be for him and possibly Avengers, we’ll see. I won’t bet against wolverine and deadpool.

As for DC I’d argue those properties fatigued at different times. All that’s left is the 🦇Much like the 🕷️

@AllsGood - all movies are down, not just super hero films.

I think the Flash will blow both out of the water, Guardians will fall off the cliff and not have any legs. No one knows bluebeetle, it looks like a Xena episode, it never should have been made and will far FARRRR worse that Shazam 2, and probably be close to Morbious. It will probably be another nail in the superhero move genre, which directors killed by not giving fans what they want!!! What we want is comic accurate characters and stories and stop changing the source material.

@cubichy - But the Flash is carrying some serious baggage. I don't see parents taking their children to see Groomer Flash.

@cubichy - Ezra Miller was cast in the lead role more than eight years ago, during which time they've been arrested on multiple occasions for disorderly conduct, physical assault and burglary, among other things, and also have been accused of grooming minors and leading a cult.

@AllsGood - no, i dont see that. I see keaton and the first batman i grew up with, you better belive my kids, now teens are going to see keaton. I dont care about the actor, i care about the comic book characters and the story and its flashpoint, i have to see it.

@AllsGood - the kids stuff is as bad as it gets, but again, i care about the comic book side, not the actor and cause its flashpoint, you know ezra is being replaced at the end, i cannt wait to see keaton and aflec....cannot wait. Guardins will fall off the clif and bluebettle is a power rangers episode and no one knows the characted, will crater!!!

I missed that trailer somehow, but that looks . . . cheap. Like, probably fun, but more like a trailer for a CW show than a movie getting a theatrical run.
