Blue Beetle was recently made available to purchase on Digital, and is set to be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31 (a Max streaming date has yet to be announced).
The movie has been performing pretty well on the likes of Google Play, Apple TV, and Vudu, but even if it does ultimately find a new lease of life on home release, it has, unfortunately, been awarded the dubious honor of being known as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time at the worldwide box office - and will be stuck with this title unless Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom completely tanks when it arrives in theaters this December.
After taking in $71.2 million in the United States and Canada and $56.8 million in overseas territories, Jaime Reyes' big-screen debut has amassed just $128 million globally.
Although Blue Beetle did prove to have stronger legs than fellow recent DC movies The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, even taking its relatively modest budget ($130 million not counting marketing/promotion costs) into account, this is obviously not a good result.
Will the movie's performance influence James Gunn and Peter Safran's decision to keep Reyes on as the new DCU's Blue Beetle? Probably not. The movie did receive good reviews, and its poor BO performance can likely be attributed to the fact that this is a relatively obscure character, and a lack of interest in the DC brand overall.
This is something Gunn and Safran are going to have to work very hard to rectify if they hope to make the DCU a success, and some feel they are already off to a bad start by allowing some actors from the previous era to stay on as their respective characters.
