BLUE BEETLE Will End Its Theatrical Run As The Lowest-Grossing DCEU Movie Of All Time

Blue Beetle is now available on Digital having recently finished its theatrical run, and the final box office numbers mark it as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time...

Blue Beetle was recently made available to purchase on Digital, and is set to be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31 (a Max streaming date has yet to be announced).

The movie has been performing pretty well on the likes of Google Play, Apple TV, and Vudu, but even if it does ultimately find a new lease of life on home release, it has, unfortunately, been awarded the dubious honor of being known as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time at the worldwide box office - and will be stuck with this title unless Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom completely tanks when it arrives in theaters this December.

After taking in $71.2 million in the United States and Canada and $56.8 million in overseas territories, Jaime Reyes' big-screen debut has amassed just $128 million globally.

Although Blue Beetle did prove to have stronger legs than fellow recent DC movies The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, even taking its relatively modest budget ($130 million not counting marketing/promotion costs) into account, this is obviously not a good result.

Will the movie's performance influence James Gunn and Peter Safran's decision to keep Reyes on as the new DCU's Blue Beetle? Probably not. The movie did receive good reviews, and its poor BO performance can likely be attributed to the fact that this is a relatively obscure character, and a lack of interest in the DC brand overall.

This is something Gunn and Safran are going to have to work very hard to rectify if they hope to make the DCU a success, and some feel they are already off to a bad start by allowing some actors from the previous era to stay on as their respective characters.

What did you think of Blue Beetle? Drop us a comment down below.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

You have to be a special type of lame to make less money than Shazam 2. Honestly impressive.

@KWilly - the writing was on the wall when they announced gunn as new head of DC and he was starting a whole new continuity. none of these movies this year mattered at all. they are essentially pointless in the ongoing story telling under gunn. it doesnt help that old dceu behind the scenes [frick]ery is associated with these as well. they didnt stand a chance to make money. expect the same with aquaman 2. nothing changes until superman legacy hits.

This is what happens when you roll out D list characters that are not connected to a popular brand. While this is not the direction that I would go with slapstick comedy and over use of CGI....the movie was OK when compared to most other CBMs and therefore did not deserve this distinction.

@Forthas - Ciron man was hardly an a lister before 2008 and ill never forget the insistence that guardians of the Galaxy would be marvels first flop right when it was announced before we even saw a frame dcs rep didn't help maybe the strikes? If he could have promoted it I'm sure xolos cobra Kai fame would have helped

@Forthas - Gruardians of the Galaxy was a "D" rated characters. Overuse of CGI?? Glad they got all them real life dinosaurs for all 3 Jurassic World films.

@TheCoonII

Actually Guardians of the Galaxy proves what I stated. The film was connected to a popular franchise Marvel and came right after the success of the Avengers. Also like Antman and and fellow C lister Dr. Strange, it is one of the few Marvel trilogies to NEVER get to a billion dollars box office haul.

@Forthas - Huh ? Dr. Strange isn't a trilogy yet. Also add Thor to the never hit a mill list. Yeah IM and CM did but Cap 3 is arguably an Avengers flic. Not a good point.
Forthas
Forthas - 10/9/2023, 11:20 AM
@JDL - It is a great point! It does not matter if it is a Trilogy

Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spiderman, Black Panther, and Avengers have all met that threshold.

Only four franchises with multiple films have not...Dr. Strange, Thor, Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Like you stated Dr. Strange still has an opportunity to do so and nearly did BUT in the film where that almost happened he was paired with another super hero/villain Wanda and America Chavez with cameos from Wong, Reed Richards, Charles Xavier, Black Bolt..etc...demonstrating that a C-list character does not sell films without being associated with A-list heroes.

I am not counting Eternals, Black Widow and Shang Chi because of when they came out.

@Forthas - Comparing solo films to group films on a revenue issue is invidious, So strike the Avengers and Cap 3. That leaves 4 flic series that have passed a billion and 4 that havent. Not a great point. YMMV

@KaptainKhaos -

Those who chose to support The Flash despite its controversies did not do so out of love for the character, or for DC as a publisher.

@KaptainKhaos - Honestly it was decent at parts. On second watch it felt cringe fest to me. Reyes Character and his Father was only well written characters, rest everything was a mockery of that culture Heck Coogler did better job in portraying South American culture with a respect.

The movie was okay, propped up mostly
By the cast- but it felt really painfully derivative of things we’ e seen before.

Damn, can't DC get a major win for once?! it's no wonder they only decide to put out BATMAN and SUPERMAN MOVIES because THEY know those movies are major successes and anything else besides BATMAN and SUPERMAN doesn't even likely compare to these two movie franchises what I think the problem is there's WAY TOO MUCH COMEDY tone it down go back to being serious make every character like batman and superman and WATCH the box offices change results. THAT"S THE PROBLEM THO THESE MOVIES ARE WAY TOO COMEDIC LIKE MARVEL. STOP DEBATING AND HATING AND TRY TO BELIEVE IN GOD. I'm out.

@FaithfulBeliver - I wouldn't put superman in the major success category, if legacy makes around the same money MOS and superman returns did, WB will panic lol. Like we've gotten as many Shazam movies as Superman movies in the past 2 decades.

Is this the official figures? You've marked it down as the DCEU when James Gunn and Peter Safran's both have said Blue Beetle is a DCU film (not DCEU) and that all actors will return playing the Reyes family and Xolo will be Blue Beetle on many more future projects. Maybe check before post.

@nimso27 - I am 30 year old and simply looking at BO stats.

By the way you got mad at my comment and also made a huge deal on whether it's "DCU" or "DCEU", I'd say you are rather projecting yourself.
whynot
whynot - 10/9/2023, 11:05 AM
@nimso27 - Gunn already said the blue beetle in the new DCU is a variant of the one in the DCEU. It will be the same for every character that crosses over from the DCEU to the DCU. So no Blue Beetle is def a DCEU movie ;)
