While Sony are said to be hoping for an eventual $1 billion haul for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the comic book movie which is currently dominating theatres across the world is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The sequel has today passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office with a grand total of $502.2 million. With over $167 million in North America and $335.2 million internationally, it's having no trouble beating 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. That was far from a flop, but only a moderate success for Marvel Studios. These types of numbers however will make the Captain America franchise one of their biggest. The first instalment earned only $370 million in 2011, and there's still plenty of time for the sequel to earn an awful lot more! With over $80 million from China alone, the importance of that territory is also clear.
