CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD Star Tim Blake Nelson Says The Leader Is Created With "Absence" Of VFX

Captain America: Brave New World star Tim Blake Nelson has addressed his return as Samuel Sterns/The Leader in the upcoming movie, praising the creative team and confirming the use of practical effects.

Following delays caused by last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Captain America: Brave New World is set to be released in theaters next February.

Sam Wilson is expected to square off with Red Hulk, but somewhere in the background, The Leader is thought to be pulling the strings. Played by Tim Blake Nelson, the villain hasn't been seen in the MCU since 2008's The Incredible Hulk when his transformation was first teased by Marvel Studios.

In a recent interview with Michael Rosenbaum, Nelson addressed his return as Samuel Sterns when he said, "I'm very happy about it. It's a wonderfully directed movie by Julius Onah."

"I can tell you about my character that we did everything we could, and this was entirely supported by Marvel and I'm so grateful to Kevin Feige and Nate Moore for supporting this: they were on board 100% to do the character as practically as possible with an absence of digital stuff."

The actor continued, "I really credit Marvel and also Julius for wanting to make a very much reality-based superhero movie, as oxymoronic as that sounds. In terms of our approach to The Leader, that's really where we went and I was really gratified to do it that way."

This lines up with what Nelson told us earlier this year when he confirmed "[I] worked with the Marvel team and this wonderful makeup artist named David Atherton on The Leader's appearance.

Practical effects could mean the villain doesn't look quite as over-the-top as his comic book counterpart. However, an argument could be made that it doesn't matter if it allows Nelson's performance to shine through.

We'd expected The Leader to factor into She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as the leader of the Intelligencia, only for those theories to go nowhere (which still feels like a missed trick on Marvel Studios' part). In Captain America: Brave New World, expect him to play a key role in transforming President Ross into a rampaging Hulk.

Captain America: Brave New World's cast includes Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Liv Tyler, Xosha Roquemore, and WWE Superstar Seth Rollins.

Julius Onah helms the movie from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, though the director is believed to have also taken a pass at it. Matthew Orton, meanwhile, has written new scenes for the additional photography scheduled to take place this summer.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to arrive in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Looking forward to seeing what he's going to look like!
I would also like Marvel to introduce their supervillain prisons. They included the Raft in Civil War so they could arrest more villains instead of killing them off

@Bokis - Also feature or referenced ones, inc the raft, in their shows such as AoS, JJ, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk...

...not that they are required viewing but been a bunch of characters apprehended in films/shows and at least two confirmed canon supervillain prisons (possibly more if you add the one from All Hail the King and the ones Kingpin and Vulture ended up in although those seemed more standard jails).

@Apophis71 - Yeah, I just feel it's a missed opportunity to not keep more villains around just in case

Leader has always looked goofy to me. I think it is because they put hair on his head.

@Forthas - I think goofiness adds to the intimidation factor. Imagine an introductory scene, meant to showcase exactly what the Leader looks like, only to show him brutally taking someone out to set his tone.

Give him a silly image with Gustavo cruelty...

Interesting…

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some CG touches here & there but if it indeed is 💯 practical then that makes me even more excited to see it.

Looking forward to the film aswell!!

I'm excited for him to be back in the MCU. I hope he's a lasting villain and not a one and done.

Looking forward to seeing it, and hopefully it starts a new trend with Marvel. We all know that they haven't always had the greatest VFX.

I think his head size doesn't need to be any bigger than what they showed of him in the Hulk/Abomination movie. Anything bigger or longer than that will really make him look ridiculous. 😆 Also, I know the gamma radiation is exposed directly into his brain causing it to transform, but his body transforms as well causing him to turn green like the Hulk, but with no super strength. Smh I never understood that concept because I felt that he should have some super strength because it's gamma radiation the same stuff that made Hulk and Abomination super strong as well as green-haired Doc Samson. I hope they introduce Doc Samson as well, I like to see them explain the green hair 😁, but they probably won't. But yeah the Leader should have some super strength, not on the level of Hulk and Abomination, but he should have some strength.
