The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are now officially at an end, but with productions forced to pause for such a long period of time, release date delays were inevitable, and Marvel Studios has now pushed all but one of its 2024 big-screen releases into 2025!
The trades have announced that Deadpool 3 is moving from May 3, 2024, to July 26, 2024, while Captain America: Brave New World is being pushed back to February 14, 2025, Thunderbolts is moving from December 20, 2024, to July 25, 2025, and the Blade reboot will now open on November 7, 2025.
While these release date shifts are not exactly unexpected, we do have some surprising details on the reasons (aside from the strikes) Brave New World was delayed.
According to Jeff Sneider on this week's episode of The Hot Mic, the latest Captain America adventure did not go over particularly well in test screenings. Apparently, three key sequences have been cut, and extensive reshoots are planned from January until May/June of next year.
In non-Marvel changes, Disney has also pushed Mufasa: The Lion King from July 5, 2024 to Dec. 20, 2024.
So, Deadpool 3 will be the only Marvel Studios movie opening next year. Earlier today, star Ryan Reynolds confirmed that the threequel would be ready for the summer by sharing a photo of Dogpool.
“Did Dogpool save the day? Not a chance in gremlin hell,” the actor captioned the photo. “But she IS currently causing the Disney plushy merch department nightmares. Coming with the movie, Summer 2024.”
The fourth Captain America movie started shooting on March 21 at Trilith Studios, Atlanta, before moving to Washington, DC. The strikes previously impacted several other Marvel Studios productions, but we thought Brave New World had managed to avoid any significant delays.
We've seen quite a few set photos do the rounds online, some of which featured members of the villainous group known as the Serpent Society. We also got a look at Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) suited-up in his new Cap costume, and Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) sporting a fairly comic-accurate outfit as the MCU's new Falcon.
Specific plot details are still under wraps, but we will hopefully begin to learn a little more about Sam Wilson's first big-screen outing as the Sentinel of Liberty soon.
