Marvel Studios announced last week that a sequel to their Joe Johnston-directed Captain America: The First Avenger flick had been given a 2014 release date. And while they've "declined to comment" on the sequel's potential director(s), Deadline has provided an update via their ever-reliable "insiders".

The list includes Community‘s Joe & Anthony Russo and The Adjustment Bureau helmer George Nolfi, but I’m told Marvel is talking to others for a film that Disney just dated that film for April 4, 2014, with a storyline that picks up after the upcoming Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers. F. Gary Gray had been on that short list, but I’m hearing that he has withdrawn from consideration and is in hot and heavy negotiations to direct the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton for New Line Cinema.

Described as a political thriller, Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster “Captain America: The First Avenger” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) continues his affiliation with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Anthony & Joe Russo (“Community,” “You, Me and Dupree”) takes over directorial duties from Joe Johnston, who helmed the first film. And “Captain America 2” hits theaters on April 4, 2014.

Nolfi's the best choice out of the ones on the list. Hope he gets the gig.

Don't go with the community guys, we need some serious directors(Comedy and superheroes drive me nuts), (IE: Fantastic Four). Go with Nolfi already, espionage expereince works with me.

JKM - Wachowskis on first Matrix? Weitz brothers on About A Boy?

Also as much as Community is one of the best shows on TV, not sure how well they would do a big budget superhero movie. Not mad keen on the other directors tbh

The community guys would be my choice. Only problem is could co-direction work? yeah it works for TV but would it work for film without having conflicting vision that could muddle the story.

Joe & Anthony Russo are comedy directors. Their directorial filmography only includes "You, Me, and Dupree," and "Welcome to Colinwood." I liked the first Cap, it was good enough, but it wasn't without it's cheesiness. It could have had a real feel like Saving Private Ryan as opposed to The Rocketeer (Johnston directed), would be my main criticism. But good luck landing someone like Steven Spielberg (Director of Ryan) Marvel.

Although hiring a relative newbie is not entirely promising it's still better than Louis Letterrier or Joe Johnston.

I haven't seen The Adjustment Bureau, but between those choices, I think they should go with George Nolfi.

haven't seen adjustment bureau and not following community on the tube, but..yeah, i gotta go with Nolfi. then again, favreau's known for his funny stuff, not technical stuff.

Haven't seen The Adjustment Bureau, but I'm QUITE confident that it's way better than You, Me, And Dupree! The Russo Brothers!?!? For serious!?!? Yeah, Community is funny. If you want to give them a job, Feige, let them develop Howard The Duck! Russo Bros for the FAIL!!!!

Let John Favereau do it and update the uniform. Give him some Asgarding chainmail for protection and give him a real military belt for pete's sake! Of all the costumes to half-ass, they had to pic Caps!
