Due to the relatively few production updates of their latest movie,
THOR, Marvel Studios has become known for the secrecy surrounding filming updates. It's no doubt this trend will continue with the Joe Johnston directed
Captain America: The First Avenger, which just began prepping for principal photography in the United Kingdom on June 28th.
Though only two days into production, the film crew are set to bring an important part of Captain America mythology to the big screen. A student of the University of Manchester sent a message to
ComicVine yesterday, revealing that the crew for a film titled
Frostbite are planning on closing down several streets in her area that will act as 1940's New York. Frostbite, as was revealed several months ago, is the working title for
Captain America. False titles such as this are used for many large-scale movies, in an efforthttp://comicbookmovie.com/admin/Articles.aspx to detract attention from filming locations and sets.
Since I'm not one to easily believe anonymous movie updates, I attempted to test the validity of this information. Luckily, I was able to get in touch with a local production company from the area, who not only confirmed the information but provided me with several test photos that were used in the search of a location best fitting 1940's Lower East Side Manhattan, New York:
* These images are of locations that were ultimately not selected by the studio for the film
Those familiar with Captain America's comics origin know that the Lower East Side (or LES) of Manhattan, New York, was where a young Steve Rogers lived before volunteering for the US Army's Super Soldier Program which turned him into the Star Spangled Avenger.
UPDATE: I was just able to confirm a more specific setup location for this scene. Beginning this week, the production crew will be in the direct vicinity of
57 Hilton Street. Manchester M1 2EJ. No word yet on how long this shoot will take to complete or when filming will actually begin, so if you are in the area and want to catch a glimpse you'd better keep your eyes peeled.
Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Hugo Weaving (Johann Schmidt/Red Skull), Tommy Lee Jones (Gen. Chester Philips), Stanley Tucci (Dr. Abraham Erskine), Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). The film is scheduled for theatrical release July 22nd, 2011.
