My Two Cents: The Casting of Captain America

My Two Cents: The Casting of Captain America

Everybody has an opinion about Cap's casting, here's mine.

The day I discovered that Chris Evans had been cast to play Steve Rogers/Captain America my immediate reaction was that he wasn't right for the role, and I think alot of Cap fans around the world agreed.

There are alot of factors that don't make him right for the role, firstly he's not big enough, I see Cap as someone the size of somebody built like Dwayne Johnson (Clearly not Johnson though), 6'6, built like a brick shit house, also i've only seen him in roles where he plays cocky, obnoxious, arrogant pricks, such as Johnny Storm, so it's hard to imagine him as the patriot that but his own body on the line as part of an experiment for the greater good. He's got brown hair and not blonde, the list goes on.

The good thing is, all of these things are easy enough for Marvel to work around, dye his hair, slap on a bit of CGI like they did with Tim Roth as The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk, give him a decent script, and this will move him one step closer to the Cap we Marvel fans want and deserve. And these things alone are enough to restore a bit of optimism into my mind about the project.

The jury's still out on the chosen actor to portray Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan is pretty much an unknown to me, so it'll be interesting to see hoow he does as Bucky, and also interesting if/how if they do, parallel both origins, would it be too much begin both storys at once?

This movie is essential for setting up for The Avengers and could be the most important Marvel movie of all time. Unfortunatly, as ever it's a case of wait, see and hope, that we don't have another Ben Affleck/Michael Clarke Duncan situation on our hands.

"also i've only seen him in roles where he plays cocky, obnoxious, arrogant pricks, such as Johnny Storm"

key words: YOU'VE only seen him in those cocky, comic, arrogant roles. but he HAS played serious roles, and was great in them.

and i gotta disagree, the last thing i want to see are CGI muscles put on him, lol. no way. Cap isn't really built like a shithouse either, although i agree, Evans does seem a little small. but give the guy some time to beef up, and i'm sure he'll be fine.

Go watch movies like Sunshine or London and that will change your mind about his other roles.

Yawn-This is a long comment, not an article. Your whole argument is he doesn't "look" the part?

The only people that can truly look like comic book characters are wrestlers and porn stars. Now, as entertaining as it might be, doesn't make for a very good movie to watch.

You want an actor to make you believe he is the character being portrayed. Evans can do that for Cap

@DogsofWar agreed. its the actors ability, first and foremost. they will make him look very close to the cap we all know. and itll be his ability that will truly shape the character. i have faith in evans.

VIGILANTE @ First off cool name dude!

Second, EVANS is not right for STEVE ROGERS, all i'll see is JOHNNY [frick]ing STORM, its a pity MARVEL had to Bullsh1T everyone, well looks like we're all stuck with it, its a real pity it came down to such a lazy choice!

The guys on his fifth or sixth CBM role yawn!

Its him and REYNOLDS racing for who can get the most cbm roles lol!

Sad really, theres a lot of actors out there that deserve this role and a chance to shine, oh well!

By the way i like CHRIS a lot, just not in this!

I completely disagree. Evans is perfect for Captain America. He has the look, acting skill, and Build(He needs to build upon it,though).
@LEEE-You're STILL complaining about Evans? You wanted Sam Worthington(Small and Austrailian) and Jason Lewis(crappy actor). The only Cap choice of yours i agreed with was Armie Hammer. Which was ok. You cast everything else PERFECTLY. Besides Captain America of course.

NIGHT @ Cheers lol!

I can't help it, its a lazy choice of MARVEL lol!

Anyone from PINE, DECAP, McPARLIN, HAMMER, SEARS etc etc was better than him for this role! ; D

I thought pretty much the same when I saw the news but then I did my research: I saw Sunshine, London and Street Kings and while I don't think Evans is the best actor in the world I think he has what it takes to become a good Captan America. Besides, all the physical aspects can be easily fixed.

As for Stan, I know he's more famous because of Gossip Girl but the guy shared scenes with Ian McShane in Kings and he didn't fade in the background and whoever manages to do that is pretty damn good, imo.

So yeah, I have faith in them and in this project. Yes, it could have been so much better but all things considered, I don't think it's looking bad at all.

LEEE-They could've went with someone else!
But out of there finalists. He was the best!
Chris Pine should've been Cap btw. Or Armie Hammer! :)

@mindform: Is this him... Christopher Egan

mindform - 4/7/2010, 7:30 PM
@SHHH Oh, I didn't like Chris Egan that much but Sebastian Stan had wonderful scenes with Ian McShane, the scene in the stairs in the first episode I think was really powerful stuff.

Every thing you're complaining about; height, hair color, size, can all be altered. Height is never an issue in movies, look at Tom Cruise, he's like 5'5, yet he towers everyone (naturally) in any movie he does. Evan's build is also a no brainer, if Hemsworth can get big in time for Thor, if Bale can get big in the time between The Machinist and Batman Begins, then Evan's can get the size needed to play the roll. Also, an artist's depiction of Cap is always changing, he's not a body builder, he's in peak physical form, if he was real I would think he'd have more of a body of a gymnast, maybe slightly larger. That would be no problem for Evan's physique. And his hair color...ok seriously that's the lamest excuse for him not to play Cap. I'm not even going to further dignify that with a response, that's just retarded.

Basically your argument is for argument's sake, it holds no water, all it is an incredibly long opinion with nothing solid to back it up.

Thanks for the feedback guys, i'll definatly be looking into Evan's more serious roles.

@Stumblin: Yes my argument is for argument's sake, it's also the first ever article i've ever ever ever written, so I apologise if it's hasn't made great reading material, i'm on a learning curve with it, I care passionatly about comic books and comic book movies and wanted to share that, but all I was doing was voicing my opinion.

@LEEE: Thanks for the comment about my name, this seems to be the only thing positive that has come out of this lol.

Not to worry, back to the drawing board.

Stumblin - 4/8/2010, 10:07 AM
I gotcha, first or a thousandth article doesn't matter. Take your time with these or you'll be subjected to verbal abuse haha! Just messing, I'm not looking for Shakespeare here but all of your arguments against Evan's really doesn't back up why you think he might not make a good Cap. Granted I haven't seen his more serious drama type acting either so I can't comment on that, but all the physical features you mentioned are null and void.

The thing about writing articles is that you are opening yourself to brutally honest people. So expect strong opposite opinions if you're going to express your opinion.

@ Ecksman seen em and it hasnt change my opinion of his acting skills. He is average at best.
@ Night how can you say He has the look, acting skill, and Build when he obviously doesnt. Have you even read a Captain America Comic because it doesnt appear to me that you have with this statement.
@ Vigilante Michael Clark Duncan as King Pin actually surprised me. I think he nailed it. I was very skeptical but he did his part cant help ben and ferrel suck as actors.

MTL@ "But I still can't really see him doing things like yelling "Avengers Assemble!" or giving an inspiring speech on the same level of Braveheart"

well that speech was delivered by an alcoholic, anti-semitic crack pot doucher. so i guess we all have different sides to us that people don't see.

GO EVANS!
