Disney CEO Bob Iger Says THE MARVELS Box Office Woes Are A Result Of A Lack Of Supervision During Filming

Disney CEO Bob Iger is causing quite a stir online as his statements regarding The Marvels' box office performance is being interpreted as a thinly veiled shot at director Nia DaCosta.

Appearing at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Disney CEO Bob Iger is making waves within the Marvel Cinematic Universe online community with statements regarding The Marvels.

Some fans are taking Iger's comments as a not-so-subtle jab at director Nia DaCosta, stating that the Captain Marvel sequel lacked supervision during filming.

"The Marvels was shot during Covid,” Iger explained. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

It's no secret that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige keeps a tight grip on the overall narrative of the MCU's trajectory.  However, it's a lesser-known fact that Feige's team of executives essentially act as his eyes and ears on set: members of this executive-level team include Louis D'Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Nate Moore, and several others.

It seems Iger is stating that COVID-related protocols kept Feige's eyes and ears off set, and that's how The Marvels got off track.

Some MCU fans coming to DaCosta's defense are pointing out that no one is suggesting Peyton Reed needed supervision on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476.1 million gross from a $200 million production budget) or that James Mangold needed someone looking over his shoulder on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($384 million gross from a $295 million production budget).

Iger could have pointed to any number of factors that led to the film's underperformance, including the actor's strike and their inability to promote the film or the small but vocal faction of MCU fans who proudly spewed vitriol across the internet that they were never going to support a film starring three women.

The Marvels is currently on track to end its theatrical run at roughly $300 million worldwide from a production budget of $219 million.  It's certainly a gigantic misfire for the once unflappable MCU but it's not exactly great PR for Iger to throw DaCosta under the bus, either.

The Marvels stars Brie Larson (Short Term 12, Fast X) as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris (The Photograph, Candyman) as Monica Rambeau/Photon, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, Zawe Ashton (Not Safe For Work, Nocturnal Animals) as Dar-Benn.

Also appearing in supporting roles are Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, The Bay), Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class, Concrete Utopia), and Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion).

Teaming up changes everything everyone.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.'

Maybe if you and your fellow AMPTP members made a deal sooner, the cast might have been able to promote it long enough for it to have done slightly better.

I think it is more a reflection on Feige of anyone. DaCosta was still a bit green and the people above her should have been mindful of that.

@Forthas -

Yup!

Feige thought he could sit back and relax after endgame so he put his minions in charge.

How embarrassing to be Feige's right hand man and fumble the bag this bad😬.

It all falls on feige in the end💁

@Forthas - This worries me tho because, like DC getting messed up, if the big bossman starts to stick his nose into the MCU, only bad things will come.

From the David Zaslav article to this, it's hard to say who the bigger moron is between the two.

Zaslav, easy. Not like Iger's any good, but it's like asking what do you wanna shit your pants with: hard and easy to wipe turds, or soaking diarrhea.

@DrReedRichards - Much as I hate to say it, Iger is a necessary evil. The MCU was at its peak while he was there. As soon as he left, cracks started to show. He knows what must be done to bring the MCU back to its glory days. He must be there so that the F4 and X-men reboots live up to expectations.

@MCUKnight11 -

I don't know if it's because Iger left that shit hit the fan (especially with Disney+) or because Chapek took over. It's hard to say.
MCUKnight11
MCUKnight11 - 11/29/2023, 10:05 PM
@DrReedRichards - Iger was just following everyone else and decided Disney needed it's own streaming service. Chapek was the one who demanded that D+ be the priority by sending all movies there in too short amount of time and wanted more content than was feasibly possible. Iger was the keg and Chapek the match.

JustAWaffle - 11/30/2023, 4:05 AM
@MCUKnight11 - They need to bring back the Marvel committee that got canned after Civil War. All decisions had to go through them and their impact lasted until EG.

If Feige is reigned back by their decisions there could still be hope for the future of the MCU.

It was Feige's fault for hiring directors that don't give a shit about the source material. The director literally abandoned the film during the editing process🤡
URCOMMENTSUCKS
URCOMMENTSUCKS - 11/29/2023, 9:41 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - Feige been doing that since he hired Shane Black and clapped like a trained seal when Black and his co-writer pitched him the idea of the Mandarin as a stooge. Like, too little too late to even mention that. It's a given at this point with Feige's approach to the MCU.
