After taking a backseat role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the past few years, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting one for Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. The former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director will appear in both Disney+'s Secret Invasion and Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, with Fury taking centre stage in the battle against the Skrulls.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the legendary actor played coy about his MCU future. He did, however, confirm that The Marvels will undergo reshoots this summer.
"They asked me [backstage], 'Ptolemy's 91, is that the oldest character you ever played?' I go, 'You know, Nick Fury might actually be older than him. He could be around forever. Well, he got the good shot," Jackson said. "No, I’m not done, I’m on my way back to London at some point in August, but I got to go back to do stuff with The Marvels, and I got to do stuff for Secret Invasion."
It's unclear whether Jackson means Secret Invasion is also set to undergo reshoots, but this is nothing new for Marvel Studios as additional photography has become part of their process. Last October, it was revealed that The Marvels had been delayed from this November to next February. Since then, it's been pushed to July 28, so it's unclear whether Secret Invasion comes before or after.
Either way, 2023 is looking like a cosmic time for the MCU. After a couple of years of introducing new heroes and fresh status quos for familiar faces, we could finally see this world enter a new era and better establish whatever the next big threat will be following Thanos' Avengers: Endgame defeat.
