THE MARVELS Updated Box Office Tracking Points To Better (But Still Disappointing) $70M-$80M Debut

Updated box office tracking for Marvel Studios' The Marvels is in, and the space-set sequel is looking at a slightly better - but still disappointing - opening weekend haul.

We recently reported on long-range box office forecasts for The Marvels, which pointed to a $50 million and $75M million domestic debut for the Nia DaCosta-helmed Captain Marvel sequel.

Now, updated tracking is in, and while the movie is expected to do slightly better over the course of its opening weekend, this would still be a very disappointing result.

According to THR, Marvel Studios' latest MCU adventure will likely open in the $70 million to $80 million range next month, though the trade does not that some research firms have it closer to $90M.

While this wouldn't be a bad haul for a regular studio tentpole, you have to believe Kevin Feige and co. would not be too happy about the 33rd instalment in the franchise failing to clear $80M. For some context, the first Captain Marvel movie took in $153 million when it hit theaters back in 2019.

Right now, pre-sale trends for The Marvels are currently 42% behind Eternals, 69% behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and 72% behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

If these numbers prove to be accurate, The Marvels could take in as little as $121million -$189 million over the course of its entire domestic run.

We recently got confirmation that the sequel will indeed be the shortest MCU movie yet, clocking in at just 1 hour and 45 minutes with credits. Another report indicated that it would also be one of the most modestly budgeted MCU films ($130 million), but this was later debunked. The space-set superhero flick's actual budget is closer to $220 million.

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.
