COMICS: MILESTONE MEDIA Returns

Milestone Media, the birthplace of Icon, Static Shock and many other African-American superheroes will be relaunching in the near future with Reggie Hudlin, Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle spearheading the revival.

Milestone Media, started in 1992 and published comics starring African-American superheroes as an imprint of DC Comics in the early 90's.  Since then, DC has absorbed a small contingent of the Milestone characters into the larger DC Universe (most notably Static Shock) but most of the Milestone characters fell into limbo.  Today, The Washington Post has revealed that Hudlin, Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle will lead a relaunch of Milestone as a tribute to the late, great Dwayne McDuffie.  Another aspect of the relaunch is a desire to satisfy the need to create, new African-American superheroes that have their own identity and weren't simply handed the mantle of an already established, white superhero [i.e. Falcon/Captain America,  Power Girl, etc].   Milestone retains ownership over all of its original characters and hopes to have artwork to show at SDCC 2015.

What this news means for characters like Static Shock's continued existence in the DC Comics universe remains unclear.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, but can you imagine how much more the Comic Book World would be diverse if DC didn't try to remove all competition?

HA! Blood Syndicate#1 was my first published comics work!

I'd love to see these characters flourish again outside the realm of DC Comics.

this is awesome, but I hope it doesnt mean Static wont be in the DCU anymore. I really like him being a member of the Titans and I was hoping DC would get to a film for him or something eventually. And i also really liked seeing Icon and Rocket in Young Justice

If this means more Icon, Rocket & Hardware I'm all for it. DC is really dumb not using those characters. Icon is pretty much Superman and Hardware is like Iron Man. Great characters that need to be shown more. Even Rocket once was good, then DC watered her down. What I mean by that is she use to be a teenage mother dealing with issues like raising a kid. Then when DC got their hands on her, that history was destroyed. I'll be honest pretty much all of Milestone's history was destroyed when it was brought in the DC world. It's a shame DC couldn't have brought it this back selfs, now they will see these characters become a hit again, instead of when they were at DC. I can't wait to see a new Shadow Cabinet team. The SC was Milestone's version of Justice League.

I had some Milestone comics back when they originally came out but I don't remember a thing about them. Honestly I might not have ever read them.

Is it no longer a part of the DC Universe?

Shouldn't the focus be on creating new "diverse" characters in the main two (Marvel & DC) universes, not creating a separate but equal type of universe?

We miss you, Dwayne McDufffie.

So, are the established Icon characters still owned by DC/WB? I doubt they'd let go of Static.

Yes to this! I was so happy they used Rocket and of course to a lesser extent Icon in Young Justice, but more would be great. I hope they show up in the Static Live-Action show. And I like the idea of Jaden in the role. Also hopefully this imprint still gets to cross characters over with the DCnU because I'd love to see Static and Black Lightning team up in a sort of Old-school new-school moment. Lastly speaking of African-American characters, what ever happened to Aqualad?

RIP Dwayne McDuffie. You are an inspiration to me, you are sorely missed but your legacy lives on.

Yes, finally DC have released the hold they had on Milestone. DC have a history of absorbing other comic companies and sticking them in limbo. If you check McDuffy's webpage, he state his disgust on how DC went back on their word on including the Milestone characters in the DCU. Now no one can complain about race and gender changes. Now I can start buying some DC books other than Batman.

I want a trilogy of movies about Static. The character has a lot of potential on the big screen.

Virgil Hawkins is very relatable, just like Peter Parker.

@Mothchild

Tribe, Created by Todd Johnson and Larry Stroman was published by Image. I liked that first book also, wish it had more issues. I would have liked to see where it was headed.
