Shazam is a much better name than Captain Marvel.

@puffed

Whatever floats your boat I like Captain Marvel much more then Shazam plus Shazam is the name of the wizard. I am not a big fan of calling him Shazam maybe Marvel won a lawsuit over the name or something but I don't like calling him Shazam.

Also calling him Shazam seems somewhat silly for the New 52 which is basically there version of Ultimate Marvel making everything super serious and darker.

Shazam has much bigger problems than his name change. They royally screwed him bigtime in the New 52. As my favorite DC character before the reboot, i have to say that i'm very unhappy with what they did.

Before, he was like the last remnant of a period in comics that is far gone. The fists on his hips and giant smile on his face...it was ironic that it took such an old character to bring a breath of fresh air to comics in a time when all the most popular characters were dark and brooding, or "edgy" and murderous.

Anyway, I prefer Captain Marvel as his name too. It doesn't make sense to call him Shazam. Does that mean Black Adam is Shazam too? Anyone with these powers gets called Shazam? Even though I dont personally like it, i can kind of understand it as most people outside of comic readers already know him as Shazam anyhow. But still...

I'm with staypuffed-- Shazam is a better name for the character than Captain Marvel. "Captain Marvel" (in reference to THIS guy) sounds generic, absolutely a product of the 1940s-- and unlike "Superman", there's no way to justify a name like that in the present day (why is he even a "Captain"? What the f%$# military is he affiliated with?).

It's a name that makes a lot more sense attached to the Marvel Universe versions of the character-- ALL of whom are in some kind of military, and for whom the "Marvel" name is more appropriate.

As for the New 52...I just dont understand what the head honchos are thinking.

Lets take a trip down memory lane.

DC rebooted their universe because they said it was too mumbled and jumbled in the continuity department. Something that not many could argue about, because it was. What caused all of this confusion and the inconsistencies? The blame can be squarely placed on one single thing. The Multiverse. Sure there were numerous Crisis events that screwed up all the continuity over and over again, but those events could jot have happened without the Multiverse.

So DC reboots everything. They restart the entire history of the DCU, change almost everything, but keep some characters' histories largely intact, like Batman and Green Lantern. But even though Batman's history is largely intact, there are still differences and questions. Did Bane break Batman's back? Did Jean Paul Valley take up the Batman mantle for a time? Just exactly how many Robins have there been? Was Tim Drake ever truly Robin, or did he always go by Red Robin?

Now, some of these questions from the reboot have been answered, some have not, but my point is that the New 52 is just as confusing as the Old DCU ever was. The only difference is that now ALL readers are confused by the continuity, not just new readers, but lifelong readers as well.

So, to top all of that off, what does DC do a year after the reboot? Thats right, they reintroduce the goddamn Multiverse. Not only that, but they start making the same mistakes that could lead to the same things as before. Like bringing back the Crime Syndicate and having all of these multiple Earths interacting with each other.

I just don't get what it was all for. If they were going to do a company wide reboot, then they shouldn't have half assed it. They should have gone all in and restarted EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. There would have been a nice clean slate, and all characters could have moved forward without anyone questioning the past. And they certainly should not have started making the same mistakes as before, like bringing back the Multiverse to muddle things up again. If that was their plan, they should have just stuck with the old DCU.

Rant over.

It really is unclear what happened and what didn't. I sort of like it that way.

I wanted a good jumping on point, but don't want to feel like all previous stories were pointless. I think they tried to find a happy middle, and sort of succeeded.

I do agree though they should have waited a few years before introducing Earth 2 and such. It overcomplicates things for inexperienced readers (the target demo for this whole thing)

I know this is going to be a tough concept for someone like you to understand, but forums are a place for people to discuss their opinions, whether they are good or bad. I post plenty of positive comments when i like something. But that also means when i dont like something, im gonna post that too.
